Smile More growl? 4.0 too small to = sounds of bigger V8s??

Rear mufflers deleted 6 months ago. They sound great back there, but after doing a nice carving canyon run, I want more. Think SRT biggest V8s or any of the Corvette V8s from the C5 and on.

Is this simply not achievable because the V8 is a small 4.0 litre? Supercharger plumbing inherently muffles it?

I drove an Audi RS4 and that normally aspirated 4.2 litre sounded great.

Of course I have to balance spending $ on this vs bigger antiroll bars or lower SC pulley upgrade...

The problem with the stock setup is the center muffler. Since you already removed the rear mufflers, there's no point in removing the center one - it will get too loud.
Here is my post with video/audio on the work I had done recently for very little $$$.

If I had to do it again, I would not not put on the X-pipe. I'm actually considering installing electronic exhaust valves to be able to enjoy both, loud and quiet exhaust notes.

Test pipes and no rear mufflers (center section still there).

Default Electronic valves?

Let me know if you do the controllable exhaust.

I suspect that is the only real solution. I'd like to hear it growl loud most of the time as I drive on city streets and its fun to hear regardless of speed I can do safely. But there are some freeway times, not many, that I would not want to hear that big sound.

Michael,

Your video states test pipes and no rear mufflers. So you have straight pipes from the center muffler out? Did you run the pipes over or under the axle?

That might be a little more growl than I want, but close. Maybe if I used glass packs at the rear?

Still considering the center delete only, but worried about the "drone" most people speak of with this approach.

I had no drone with the center only delete. When I removed the rears as well it was too loud and a serious drone at 2000 RPM. I installed 2 glasspacks where the center muffler and went with an X crossover. There is still a little drone but tolerable given I like the sound. Probably the next step for me will be electric cut-outs and put the stock rears back in. Go see a new XF with the electric cut-outs to get an idea.

Yes straights pipes. The pipes are over the axle, they follow the factory ones. That is the nice thing about the Jaguar exhaust, there are slip joints which you can use to create a new exhaust. Mine is louder than I would like it right now. Currently I am thinking of how I want to redo it, most likely with an x-pipe.

Dave C, I need some clarification on your statement

"I installed 2 glasspacks where the center muffler and went with an X crossover."

Before and after pictures.

Before with the center muffler deleted and a crossover

After with 2 glasspacks and a very short (X) crossover

Electric cut outs are the way to go!

Quiet when you want them to be and race car loud fully open and any setting in between.

This is the best mod I have ever done to any car I have ever owned!

On my XJR below.

Which cutouts did you go with? That is what I am really thinking about next

weisberg,
I drive and race my partner's Audi S5 all the time (including this coming weekend at Buttonwillow Raceway). It is a spectacular car with one exception: It is so quiet that you can't tell it's even running. It's a problem because unless you're watching the tach, you don't hear the engine groaning to shift (it's a 6 spd.). It makes Lexus ES350's sound ferocious. Audis are very quiet cars unless they have had custom exhausts done to them. They are nowhere near as loud as our 4.0-4.2L stock exhaust let alone altered ones. Any of the many exhaust solutions that have been posted over the years will produce great effects. Otherwise, if exhaust sound is what you're after, nothing I have heard, not the Viper, the Corvette, any Ferrari or Lambo, compares to the roar and cackle of the F-type V-8S. And now that the coupe's R model gets all of the original horsepower back (550hp), it should sound positively phenomenal. It may be my next purchase down the road. The sound is addictive.

Very Nice!
Any chance you can elaborate on your setup? In the picture I can see the (what seems) OEM mid-muffler. Did you remove any mufflers? Any chance you can post some audio of various settings - perhaps, start with the most extreme, followed by mid-level and the quietest level in the end? Also, how to you control the settings?

I can't even begin to tell you how much I love this. Is there a control in the dash or something?

I have a hidden switch where the ash tray used to be.

I ordered low profile, oval electric exhaust cut outs from Dave at DMH. $399 shipped. They have a 4 year warranty.

It has been a year and a half and they still work and seal great.

I decided that a video of this mod would be useless, you can make them sound however you want.

Here are a few of my threads on the mod:

Direct link to pics of the entire job. The pics are not in chronological order here so you will have to use your imagination as to which stage of the job we are on.
