OK guys,

My XK8 is making a noise when I :

Shift into drive or reverse
Take off
it is a tinkling noise (for lack of a better description) kind of a light metal noise- couldn't find anything upon close inspection.

Ideas?

 

The XK8 has 4 universal joints 2 in each axle that are overlooked when lubricating the suspension if you are lucky it will be one of them.

 

Hmm, I'll definitely hit them with my grease gun- it is a much lighter metal sound though- like a heat shield, but I can't find a loose piece..

 

it's the change in your pocket that the XK wants you to spend on it..

Is it when you take off and just before it shifts to next gear? Mine has a short, hi pitched zipper sound just before shifting into second and sometimes before third. It sometimes sounds like a metal vibration.

 

Could it be one of the VVT's?
I hear a similar noise when I first take off after the car has been sitting overnight, and I think that's what it is.

Phil,

That sounds like you could be a bit low on transmission fluid. I had the same sound as you...I checked the level, was about a quart low and a top-off solved the problem.

It does not sound internal- its a higher pitched rattle, like a cat converter shield except only when there is a shift from p to R or D and then on takeoff. It *sounds* like it is coming from the rear.
