Default New Denso Coils....

With my wife's 2006 XK8 now more than 16 years old and approaching 123,000 miles, I know that sooner or later I will have to replace the factory coils. Has anyone tried the Denso coils from rockauto? They are listed on the website as a "certified Denso replacement part" and currently sell for just under $33 each. I would hope that they are indeed real Denso components and not an inferior knock-off....

Update:

Avi Meron, a senior service engineer with Denso in Long Beach, California replied to my e-mail today. He wrote: "You need to make sure you are getting your Denso parts from an authorized Denso distributor. If not, we do not know the source of the parts! There is no such thing as "certified parts by Denso", only what we sell through authorized distributors is Denso." He also provided the proper Denso part number for the coils for our 2006 XK8. It is 673-9331.

Avi's e-mail signature included his phone number so I called him. He acknowledged that the official Denso coils are now made by Sun. He also provided a couple of Denso parts distributor names so I can shop around. They are densoproducts.com and partsauthority.com. He said that Carquest and Advance Auto Parts are also approved distributors. I asked about RockAuto. He said no, they are not approved so if I order from them I may get actual Denso coils but then again I may not....

He checked the current price for a 2006 XK8 Denso coil from densoproducts.com. It was about $38....

He was careful not to disparage any other sellers (including RockAuto) but he emphasized that unless I buy from an authorized distributor, I really do not know what I will be getting....

Update:

SNG Barratt currently sells the Jaguar-branded coil for $99.95 each and an aftermarket coil for $31.50 each. They told me today that neither one is made by Denso and to their knowledge Denso has not made any coils for several years now. So I e-mailed Denso Corporate via their website (denso.com) and asked them if they actually make the coils being sold as the Denso brand today. When / if they reply to me, I will post what they have to say here....

I like Rock Auto and my experience has been good. However, I bought an NGK coil from them and got an unbranded coil (no logo or text) in an NGK box. Bought from another supplier and got an actual NGK coil (logo and text) for 63. "Certified replacement" is pretty vague, Could mean it's the right size, black color and correct number of bolts needed. We've all heard the horror stories on cheap coils.

We have indeed heard the horror stories on cheap coils and that is why I am doing the research now. I want to be prepared before my factory Denso coils begin fighting me....

SNG Barratt claims they have had no issues or complaints regarding their $31.50 aftermarket coils. But I wish they could tell me who made them....

Jon89,

Denso is owned by NGK....So, Denso.....So, I'm pretty sure that either one would be pretty much the same.......So, if you can't find Denso...Buy NGK!

I've found that over the years....A Coil is a Coil...all pretty much the same.......

So Denso quality is comparable to more expensive coils? 38 sounds a lot better than 63 (NGK)
Have used from a parts car (unknown age, miles) and #8 failed. Plan to replace all.

Yep, if we hang onto these cars long enough, sooner or later we will be replacing all of the original coils. I want official Denso coils but I do not want to pay a ton of money for them. As you said, $38 is reasonable whereas $100 from certain sellers is ridiculous....

Denso is part of Toyota Group. NGK is an independent operation and don’t make coils for anybody.

if you buy the airtex 5C1420 you will get it with ford engineering part number and fomoco stamped on the side. the black denso coils stopped being put in cars around 2007.

try ordering the denso and if it doesn’t have a ford markings on it just return it.

RockAuto lists the Airtex coil mentioned above as the UltraPower 5C1420 and is currently priced at $17.62. No idea whether it is indeed a Ford part....

I didn't realize what a swamp ignition coils are. Googled UltraPower and noticed a site called "Delcoribo.com". Looks like the Chinese equivalent of RockAuto. Besides Delco, Denso, BeckArnley and NGK, other brands
include Meat and Doria 10648 (seriously Google and it does exist), Bougicord 155247, Huco, Mobeltron, Ultra Power. (tongue in cheek here). We're not looking at all the possible brands

Seriously why save a couple of bucks and risk being stranded by the side of the road? Sure cheap might work fine. Maybe brand label in a unmarked box. No guarantee tho. Why I'm doing NGK w/ logo.

And that is exactly why when the time comes, I will be ordering any new coils I need from an authorized Denso distributor....
