I believe the second phase can be completed again you just have the 1hour 24 minutes to do it.. The first successful time I did completed it was on a second attempt at phase two. First time I just didn't do it long enough.
Still no joy. I am convinced I'm executing the drive cycle as close to spec as most people could. Unless the system is very sensitive to bumps in the road (fuel slosh) I have no clue what's wrong.
I did notice on my scanner that the car will do about 4 mph on a level surface with no gas pedal, no brake pedal. Having found that, I tried again several times with just enough braking to keep the speed at no more than 2 mph, as per the spec.
Tonight I will consult some magicians and druids to see what they recommend.
I have been running it in Drive. No way to select 1st gear that I know of. J-gate starts at 2nd. Am I missing something?
I'll try using a spot with an incline.
Be careful what you wish for. So I finally got the .02" evap test to complete, and the comprehensive component monitor to show "ready". This was accompanied by an immediate P0456 fault code, the code associated with the .02" evap test. Back to square one.
Observations on the drive cycle:
- One difficulty with it is that it contains two phases and ... phase 2 will not run until phase 1 has completed and ... you get no feedback about whether phase 1 did complete as you're driving through the cycle. You have to assume it did at a certain point and try to get phase 2 to complete.
- What finally worked (unless just a coincidence) was finding a very straight, very smooth road for phase 1 and trying hard for nearly constant speed. Having done that, when I moved on to phase 2, the monitor ran on the first attempt. My conclusion is that phase 1 is pretty sensitive to the "fuel sloshing" issue, at least when you're running on not-so-straight, not-so-smooth country roads.
- When phase 2 did complete, I was not meeting the nominal speed limit of 2 mph. My scanner said 3 - 4 mph, engine at idle, no brakes. The monitor did run under these conditions.
So it's on to chasing P0456. Thanks to everyone who helped me here, special mention to SilverXKR03.
When I next try to run the drive cycle I'll report what happens.

Reason: clarity
That's actually a very good result, because it suggests you really do have an underlying issue and it's not that you have been failing to conduct the drive cycle correctly.
Here's what the DTC Summaries have to say about P0456. A very common and easily resolved cause is a leaking gasket on the fuel filler cap:
My friends have not had good luck with the auto parts store fuel caps, so if you replace yours, I recommend a Jaguar OEM cap. If that doesn't resolve the issue, a smoke test of the EVAP system may help you pinpoint the leak.
A very common cause of a small leak is a crack in a rubber hose somewhere in the system, often at a hose clamp or in the bend of a hose.
EDIT:
Other common causes are a stuck open purge valve or canister control valve. I just recently resolved P0455 on a 2004 XK8 by replacing the canister control or vent valve, which was not closing properly.
I've replaced the gas cap (genuine) and evap purge valve about a year ago because of a prior p0456. All was good after that for about a year. Something else in trouble now, I suppose. Thanks for the list of suspects.
Sorry I hadn't responded sooner chasing an electrical fault on my wife's Mini. Yes no 1st gear option, i was trying to figure out how to slow you down, wasn't thinking too well. Yes phase one has to complete before second phase has any chance of completing.
To prevent readiness monitors from being reset, you can attach a battery maintainer or charger to the battery cables while the battery is being swapped.
If you have a readiness monitor that will not reset after 100 miles, there is probably an underlying issue. Do you have any other diagnostic trouble codes stored?
To expand on Dale's post, try following the Diagnostic Drive Cycles procedures beginning on page 4 of this document:
On my scanner it says Components not completed but the DTC summary says the XK's dont have that monitor? Curious because I have everything set but catalyst and need an inspection. Im allowed one not ready. Thanks!

Hi XsSlowpokexX,
Your post doesn't make it clear. Is it the Comprehensive Component Monitor that has not reset, or the Catalyst Efficiency Monitor?
According to the 2003 DTC Summaries that I uploaded, the XKs do have the Comprehensive Component Monitor, which has both engine and transmission components.
