This is a super easy job on this car. Thought I'd write it up to encourage any one unsure about doing it.
1. Drove car onto ramps, used jack stands also for safety.
2. Drain oil via plug (replace filter if you want to)
3. Remove filler cap
4. Undo the 18 8mm bolts holding the pan. They are all easily accessible.
5. Leave two bolts in and support pan with other hand, remove last two with free hand. The pan is tiny.
6. Don't tip as you lower! It's got oil in it.
7. Pry out old gasket
8. Clean everything.
9. Press in new gasket, tabs mean only one right way.
10. Tighten bolts gradually to compress gasket evenly. Jaguar has an order but I just alternated sides. Torque wrench if you're a perfectionist.
11. Replace pan drain plug.
12. Refill with oil (5+ quarts), replace cap.
13. Start and check oil level with car level after run for a bit.
Thanks for for this post. I've had a pan sitting on a shelf for over a year because I was afraid to replace it (old pan severely dented) but this looks do-able. Can you reuse the old gasket? The cam cover gaskets are similar and they have always leaked, even with silicone added.
Your instructions seem complete although we removed the rear bolts on the x-braces to allow easier access to the pan bolts. Perhaps a 2003 4.2L coupe is a bit different than the 4.0L. Very easy job and no leaks. False economy to re-use an old gasket.
