Default Ownership cost?

I was reading Edmunds.com - and I noted that Edmunds has a statistics called 'Total Cost of Ownership'. I am thinking of doing the same thing with my XKR - has anybody on this board ever done this before with your own car?

I am already tracking all cost associated with the upkeep of the car - but exclude the fuel cost. If there are others who are interested - we can agree on the same format on how the data can be tracked - and we can combine it - then we'll have an XK8/XKR TCO cost database. And if the model is good - maybe the format can be extended to other car model on this board ..... but I'm getting ahead of myself.

I think I'll include insurance cost as well to the spreadsheet ....

LOL, I tried this the first year i owned the car (2007) and started an annual maintenance cost thread. Not alot of participation, so I never made it a recurring event. I think many new owners would like to get a 'feel' of what others are spending on their car, in maintenance and repairs, both required and preventative.

If you did this, I'm afraid it may be just you and me buddy.

Wink Lol

This would be me if i did that.

KATU channel 12 news Portland Or.
"a crazed man today drove his car off the Interstate 5 Bridge spanning the Columbia river at appropriately 4:30pm during rush hour traffic. The impending traffic jab held up motorists for many hours as police attempted to recover the body and the car . The impact into the river killed him instantly. A note found at the mans house said that he had totaled up his cost of ownership if his 2000 jaguar xkr and found that he just could not live with himself. A eye witness said he was screaming something like "i hate you, but i love you, but i hate you!" as the car flew off the bridge. ..... In other news a panda mated with a zebra today in china..."

All i have to say it,

I keep a spreadsheet with the date, cost, work performed and who performed it.

That's so I don't have to go through the receipts each time my husband asks "How much are we into this thing for now?" (Where's the icon that shows me shooting myself in the head? That's what I want to do everytime he asks.)

It's a shame he can't love my car like I do..........

could vary greatly depending on whether or not you go OEM or aftermarket. I can personally say that after having my 2003 XKR since '07, I have spent approximately $1,500...and that's using aftermarket parts!!

Well, I have all the receipts but I am not sure I want a total. My way of thinking it is that it is like my significant other.!?)&%$$$$$$$$$. If I were to calculate what she is costing I might run her over the bridge and keep the car.

I guess a more fair comparison would be to see how our cars stack up against similar high-end semi-exotic vehicles (please, let's not get started again on what constitutes and exotic). I would be willing to guess that we are not any worse off than owners of BMW's or Mercedes'.

I feel somewhat better when I hear of high-end exotics costing many thousands of dollars for routine service. I don't even know that it is true or not, but it eases the pain so I hang onto the notion............

We own two cars an '02 XKR and and '02 Prius. They are valued in different ways by the family and I don't care to compare them to each other or to other similar autos.

Who said "if you have to ask how much - you can't afford it!" Don't do this! DaleD

I agree.
How do you put a price on a grin like that?

While the perceived benefits still outweigh the perceived costs all is good.

I was in the market for a Ferrari 328, I really wanted a exotic (the cheapest to maintain and most reliable). Then I looked into the routine costs that HAD TO BE PERFORMED AT THE DEALERSHIP or certified shop. This is to maintain the petagree. When you buy a Ferrari you must also get an unbroken service record or the car has lost significent value. Oil and service cost about $500.00 every 5k miles and at 30k miles the major service starts at $5000.00 (engine requires removal). Within a few years, the service can cost more than the car. And after all this I discovered that the 328 can be blown away by a GD Camry!!!!!!!!!!!!! That settled, I started looking for a semi-exotic, a JAGUAR XKR. I bought it and have never looked back, except at those Vetts and Camrys that dare...

You made a good decision by turning down a Ferrari.Years ago I remember seeing a service record for Ferrari 355 and it was like 30K and may be even more .

Jaguar XK is better looking than most Ferrari's too

I have had a lot of cars and found that if I like the car, I spend more on it. I have an Audi A6 and the forum for that reads just like the Jag ones, many people on the forums are there because they have problems, it is not a realistic picture of the car as to reliability. My XKR has had no issues in the two years I have had it except the tranny chirp which is not a reliabilty issue. Maintenance costs are just the normal stuff. If I need pads and rotors, it will be a big number with the Brembo brakes, but it is still doable and still just normal maintenance. It goes with the territory, if you have Brembo or carbon brakes, you would expect bigger costs to maintain them anfd so goes the rest of the stuff.
