P1000 code '98 XK8
First, thanks for any help on this1998 XK8 problem! Car has 98k miles.
1. I get an engine fail safe message intermittently.
2. I took the car to my regular non-Jag mechanic to read codes. He came up with a P1000 and said it was a general diagnostic code. He cleared it for me.
3. Fail safe came back on on the way home, then did not come on for about 5 days.
4. I read in this forum that the ODBCOM reader was a good reader so I bought one so I could check this out myself. Jag wanted $140 just to plug theirs in!
5. I received the ODBCOM unit and read my codes again. I got the same P1000 code.
The car seems to run just fine with full acceleration even when the "fail safe" is on. No rough running, no high running temps, shifts fine.
Help.

You cannot clear the P1000 code, it is a base code indicating that you have recently cleared your codes or had electrical power interrupted (new battery installed). It is not indicative of any fault. When you complete the necessary (and often mysterious) "drive cycle" the P1000 will turn to P1111 which indicates that drive cycle has been completed. This can be in as soon as 100 miles, or in my case, about 600 miles of drive time.
Check to see if there are any other codes other than the P1000, and start down the path of diagnosis using those other codes.
Good luck.

Thanks to all!
This failsafe showed up right after we broke the belt. So good call on the batt disconnect!
I had the codes read after that and got the P1000. Then cleared codes. Then failsafe came back 3/4 times. Read the codes again and only got the P1000.
I will wait for a while to see if anything else happens. If I can, I will read codes when the failsafe is on.

As the others have pointed out, without turning off the car, when the failsafe message occurs, plug in your OBDII scanner. If you restart the car, it could clear it automatically. Mine does that on a incorrect gear ratio fault.
Any other 'text' that follows the failsafe message? Gearbox fault, DSC failure, anything?

When my 99 goes into failsafe you cannot drive the car, it goes into limp mode for a better word and I have to do an emergency no power stop !! Hook up code reader and shows no fault but for a p1000. Go thru clearing steps on the reader then all is well till I stop the car. Could be 20 miles or 1000 . But when I start over I get about 1/4 mile then back to failsafe and emergency stop to clear then back on the road? Any help?

You will need to get the DTCs from ALL the modules on the CAN bus because a module other than the ECM could cause the problem.
A generic code reader sometimes misses Jaguar specific DTCs as well.
A full CAN bus scan usually requires dealer level diagnostic equipment.
Maybe someone in your area can help with this?

Looked ar a you tube video on throttle body repair and cleaning by ASI. Fixed everything that was wrong with my car by doing a hard reset. Take both battery cables off and hold together for 30sec. Fixed all my problems!!!!! Apparently it erases all bad memories ( for a better word)
No more fail safe mode and car runs better than it ever has.
I have ZERO codes and no more stalling every 100 yards with a fail safe message .!!!
