P1797/1799 Codes
Back from the cruise (unbelievable!!) and going to be taking the car in today. Of course I had to do another 4 hours at the DMV to get a "day pass" so I could drive it down to the shop. The "new" TCM came in while we were away so I'm going to bring that to the shop too and make sure it has the correct VCATS. Wish me luck.
My AAA membership pays for itself every time I have something that needs to be done at the DMV. I had to get a day pass last week. It took about 10 minutes, from the time I walked in the door, to the time I walked out of the door. I highly recommend it!
I took the car into a highly recommended shop back on July 8. I left the TCM that I bought with them in case they wanted to install it to see if that was the problem. They still have the car. They seem to think the problem is somewhere in the network communication system. So it appears that, once again, life is at the mercy of a computer. As of yesterday they still had no resolution. This is only reestablishing my thought that "modern" cars are built as disposable items. Once some part of their electrical/computer system goes out you should be able to bring it to a "recycling" center and get so much per pound for the thing. It's going on a month and they can't seem to figure out why one computer won't talk to another computer. I just know this is going to come down to a $3.00 connector, chip or electrical/computer part that is not working. Of course the bill is going to be a zillion dollars for all the time they've spent on the car.

you’re chasing beyond irrelevant issues if you just need to monitors to set.
cat monitor can be a real pain in the *** on early aj27s plain and simple. if it doesn’t set the only thing i can recommend is a reflash with whatever calibration IDS has, can only be done with a vcm

Hey Xalty,
I'm hoping the people I took it to know what they're doing. As I said they were highly recommended through JOCLA so we shall see. I've already been looking at other cars to buy once this thing can be smogged and registered. I don't know if this is just one oddball issue on this one car or if, as you say, "early" cars are a "real pain in the ***". Either way, at 77, I just don't have time for the car to be "in the shop" for 4 and 5 weeks at a time because some computer doesn't want to talk to another computer. I need a car I can fix with all the tools I have in the garage and be back on the road. Which, as best as I can tell is not another Jaguar.

Well, after almost 5 weeks I had to pick up the car from the shop because they still haven't been able to locate the problem and they need the space. They think it "might be" the throttle body, or it "might be" the ABS module. They think there is some issue with the communication bus that is causing the throttle body to not connect with something or other or maybe it's the ABS module. The did install the Transmission Control Module that I purchased. They want to replace the throttle body first and see if that clears the CAT monitor. If not they'll go to the ABS module.
I'm going to check on remanufactured throttle bodies (since I can't seem to find new ones) that come with some kind of warranty and call them next week to see when I can bring it back in.
I really do miss when the brakes were one system, the fuel was another system and the transmission was a different system. If you hit the brakes and they began to squeal or didn't stop you quick enough, you didn't have to worry about the fuel system or the transmission interacting with the brakes. You just knew it was the rotors, pads, fluid or something in between those things. You didn't have to wonder if the fuel delivery system was properly communicating with the breaking system. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
And the story continues . . .

What makes me crazy is that there are no OBD2 codes!!! I thought they put all these computers in the car to tell you what is wrong with it. Isn't that the whole point of the OBD?
OBD II is about emissions and values to diagnose problems relating to them.
Jaguar (& other makes) add lots more non-OBD stuff but only some tools look for or understand them.

Well call me shocked!!! I went out this morning and, just for jollies, I plugged my OBD2 into the car and as if by magic the catalyst monitor read "OK"!!!! Now the "Component Monitor", whatever that is, is still reading "INC" but I called up the smog station I've been going to and asked if it could still do a smog test. The guy said that usually they were able to do the test if the EVAP monitor wasn't reset but he didn't know about the Component monitor. So I ran it right over and, Ta Da, it PASSED!!!! So now I can actually drive it on the highways and byways of California.
However, when I picked it up from the shop on Saturday I went to put the top down and the quarter windows went down but the top wouldn't move. Now the quarter windows don't go up and there's a red warning light on the dash that says "Hood Not Latched"!!! Do the electric systems on these cars EVER stop??? The shop said to bring it back and they'll fix it.

Congrats to you too. I put my new tags on the plate as soon as I got home. Makes me a happy camper. Now if they can just get the top working I'll be able to actually drive the car as it was meant to drive. Computers
LOL. If this thing stays running for more than a week without giving me any more bad messages on the dash and all the parts keep working I may actually finish all the little things I was going to do when I first bought it. I may get so optimistic today I may order the seat refinishing kit
. Who knows, I may even get under the dash and find those switches on the brake pedal that seem to be causing the problem with the cruise control. I'm definitely getting out the clay bar and going over the whole car to make it look prettier than it is now.

I was going to tackle the "Hood Not Latched" warning myself but since the people at the shop it was at said they'd take care of it I'll just bring it back there tomorrow morning. I've read several threads and watched some videos about it and it looks like another computer nightmare involving relays, microswitches and other "1's" and "0's" not talking to each other, LOL. That '62 Healey I've been watching is looking mighty good
Ahhhh, the joy of top down driving again. They were able to fix the top (hood)/quarter window issue. Apparently the system had to be reset manually. All that stuff with the allen wrench, piston rams, manually lowering . . . , Anyway, now the top is down and the windows are down and I'm a happy camper.
