Default Passenger Airbag light.

After beeing without a Jaguar for a few years, witch have feelt like an eternity, i slipped up and bought myself an 2003 XK Convertible. Its an 100% corrosion free Florida import. In its previous life in Sweden it has mostly been sitting for what i beleive is warious reasons..

Anyway, im no stranger to hard core troubleshooting and have been working my way through the electrical system, but i seem to fail to understand why i still are experiencing issues with my passenger airbag light.
When ignition on, the airbagsystem does its check and both lights go out, then the passenger airbag light comes on. If i then put myself in the passenger seat it goes out.. witch at first seems to be ok.. sort of.. i mean, no one in the seat ->airbag of.. right? But.. it also feels like with all this fancy sensors and detectors, the passenger airbag light should not come on when no one is present at passenger side..
When i started troubleshooting i had the code 17 on the instrument cluster and the passenger airbag light.
I do not have the correct year of the drivers manual so i have not been able to check the real meaning of the passenger airbag light.

Someone with any ideas?

I have an additional question to the abbove statement; I i am sitting in the passenger seat, and nopt putting the seatbelt on, would the passenger airbag be aktive or not? Would the airbag manage to deploy to such an extent in time, that the wooden coverpanel does not manage to club you to death?

Is the whole logistic and test of the restrainant system awaible somewhere??

My question is purely rooted in its none of my business curiosity, what are the situations in which you would not want to be wearing the seatbelt, passenger or driver ?

Check this TSB on member Gus' site:

Occupancy position sensor related, possibly. Like all things 4.2L, it's complicated.

The attached may also help

I do not have any fault codes as for now, but i would be really happy to find a proper test of the seatbelt/airbag system... how it is supposed to function/operate, hopefulle some exact information on when the passenger "airbag disconnected light" are supposed to come one... or not.
Any ideas?

Just about everything you need to know is here

Air Bag - Code 17

I've just been through this same problem that turned out to be the same component failure in the SRS module as shown in the linked thread. I got a good used one from AutoReserve Jaguar. Removing the module and replacing it was physically the most awkward job I ever did in my XK8. Not one for the faint hearted!

Exellent! Thanks!
Now i can conclude that my belt/airbag system works perfectly fine.
-No one in passenger seat -> light on, light load in seat ->light on, adult in seat ->light off (activated pass airbag), adult leaning forward ->after 5 sec. light of again.
-Also figured out that the belt tensioners will fire even if you don't have the belt in the buckle, just in case the switch in the beltbuckle is failing)
