Default performance chips- do they work?

I have a 2005 XKR. Can there be a performance chip out there that can add horsepower and give better mileage, or are they just scams? I ordered a G-Force chip today and as an afterthought searched the web to see if my choice had promise. It was amazing how many people claimed that it was a scam, they were rude, etc. Does anyone have positive results with these chips, or should I bite the bullet and refresh my ECU?

Oh no not this again....

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...e-chip-115843/
X-type Chip
Performance Engine Chips
$20 for 75+ hp boost!
GF Chip for XK
Stage 1 GTE Performance Chip
Performance Chip

There is a reason why companies like Eurocharged and ECU Tuning Group charge $1000 for a tune, because they actually work.

Anything you buy on ebay or online for less than $100 is garbage.

I may be wrong but my understanding is even the high end tuners are just laying a program on top of the factory program to cheat it. There is no real way to retune our cars due to the complicated ECU system, low production numbers and no real incentive for qualified companies to invest in the research to break the Jaguar code.

If you want POWER, fit the twin screw supercharger kit from AVOS here on the forum. Do a search, there are a couple of threads relating to this.

I still find it VERY odd that everyone calls tuning chips a fraud, snake oil, scam, rip off among many other things and yet the forum has these company's as sponsors !!!

If they do not work - why are they sponsors???

All mighty dollar I guess, seems like a sell out...

Happy motoring...

Want more power? There is a conversion kit now avail to practically do a straight up swap into the car with a Chev LS1 drive line. If ever my GTo is wrecked and the motor dies in the Jag, conversion time is coming.

I did not know it was available on a 2005. In any case IMO this is a worthwhile upgrade for an early XK8 but will not imporve hp or performance on an XKR.

A stock LS1 driveline will actually have a lot less power than he has now (350ish vs 400hp). Even an LS2 would only offer the same 400 hp (although with less low end torque than the jag has). To go the LS route and get better power than a stock 05 XKR you would have to go to an LS7 or build an engine and you are well over $15k in to do that.

Also you go from a ZF 6speed with a 4.xx 1st to a 4l60E 4 speed with a 3.xx first meaning it will "feel" slower too.

If you are seeing advertisments for GForce Chips or similar then those are the Adsearch ads or Google ads, nothing to do with forum sponsorship.

Those ads are generated based on your browsing history and cookies. If you've been searching for "chip tuning" then those are the ads you'll see, it's targeted advertising, nothing more.

The only forum sponsors/vendors that do ECU tuning are ECU Tuning Group & Eurocharged, we do have other vendors who might be offering these services soon, but for now, it's only those two companies.

Let me make it clear, GForce Chips, GF Chips, or any other "chip" companies you might see in ads on this forum are not sponsors or vendors, those are just ads from a 3rd party advertising company, directed at you, because of your browsing history.

A plug in chip for $50-$150 cannot be compared to a proper ECU tune costing upwards of $1000. The cheaper plug in "universal chip" is the scam, the ECU tune like from ETG or Eurocharged is the real deal.

Thank you Cambo351 for your explanation, I appreciate your time and effort.

My apologies to the powers that be, at the Forum.

Though I have never browsed for chips!

Happy Motoring...

I get ads for Chevy trucks, Michelin tires and Infinity Internet Plus, and I have browsed for none of those.

You have an XKR. On a supercharged car, a supercharger pulley mod can actually make a legitimate modest power improvement for relatively good bang for the the buck. Pulley mods gains will be limited by heat soak in the supercharger however. In my opinion, this, as well as making sure your car is in top working order, and proper adjustment of the throttle cable, are the low hanging fruit.

No worries guys, we've had a few instances where people have thought that the ads are sponsors, it's easy enough to get confused.

Just one last thing, ads are based not just on your search history, but your browsing history too, if you've looked at this page, you've looked at "performance chips" so I wouldn't be surprised if you get lots of ads for chips now.

If they're google ads (for example) appearing in the page then in effect they ARE sponsors. No-one has to add code for googleads to their site...

Back in April 2011, after seven years of trying my wife finally managed to drag me kicking and screaming into her doctor's office for my first and only (to date) colonoscopy. Before I finally caved in and agreed to go, I did my usual research via Google. As a result, I was beseiged by colonoscopy ads from all over the country for at least two weeks afterwards. Annoying and amusing at the same time. Be careful what you search for, and be prepared to deal with the automated target-marketing consequences after you do....

Remember also that most browsers have an 'In private' mode, and also a way to 'clear cookies', both of which can eliminate your browsing trail.

Just eliminate the ads by installing Adblock plus. That way when you're reading about 'chips' there won't be any mysterious ads from Frito-Lay.

  • $69 Jaguar Power Chip
    gfchips.com

60 Horsepower 4-7 MPG Fuel Savings Easy Install + Money-Back Guarantee

What is this then, if not a advertisment ?

It is at the top and bottom of both pages. I have never surfed for this info.
Because this shows up quite prevalently on the forum, it may make people think that it is a legitimate product that the forum backs.

You mean the is no way of stopping this type of advertising of fraudulent products on the forum pages ???

    Happy Motoring...

not the Jag forum. It appeared because others used the words 'performance chip' which the robot read and matched up with an ad that wanted posting.
