Picking an XK8 door lock
Hi folks, visiting from the X308 side, thought you may find this of interest.
I watch this guys videos a lot, he is quite resourceful with some of the simplest things, to complicated ones. But in any case, these things are available out there so don't be naive about your expensive (or cheap) locks.
...Just to give you an idea of what seems like a secure lock..

Never said I was surprised, just providing information for the ignorant. I work in the electronic locking controls, so I'm very aware of mechanical flaws.

Have one of these. Only particularly useful at the junkyard when they don't have a key to open the trunk/boot.
Risk around here of them being stolen seems quite low unless it's a joyrider who happens on the actual key for some reason. Buying this and practicing with it to make it fast to steal something inside seems at odds with the current depreciated 'use case'.
As noted above, not the car unless you have something more sophisticated to sniff/crack the ignition verification. The encryption on the later XK8s has been hacked but is not a likely target, it seems to me.

With a mechanical key tool like this, it seems the path to driving off with one of our cars would be pretty straightforward...
To crack, you need to sniff the interaction between the ignition key and the car. So, you need something that acts like the target Megamos chip with a table which is more than a Terabyte, specific to the target chip. You also need to insert and turn the 'key' multiple times without fiddling around much (it's fiddly) within some short timeframe.
(Parenthetically: Another approach would be to use WDS/IDS. Similar level of equipment, trade lower cost for more time.)
Sure, it's possible, but all of this implies a level of commitment that seems beyond the level of return.
you could use this tool with IDS and an uncut blank key. total equipment cost is under $400
i’d say i could steal one in about 6 minutes. have the vin select screen open and ready to go to save time

Perhaps I could post the 'parts cars' on the marketplace? Wonder if anyone would be suspicious that I suddenly have 40 parts cars where the VINs have mysteriously all 'rubbed off' everywhere?
Once I've stolen the 5-10ish in the Durham area (unfortunately three are mine, but are obviously easier to 'steal'), y'all need to look out in the Raleigh/Greensboro/Charlotte areas.
Note: Unclear how my wife will react to 40 cars piled into the back yard with the explanation "I found them sitting around".

Dale,
Let me know when you plan to come steal my wife's 2006 XK8. I will leave the garage doors open, turn off all exterior floodlights, ensure that both dogs are crated in the family room, and leave an unopened bottle of your preferred wine in the passenger seat....

Sounds good, key in driver's seat so I don't need to lug the computer?
'Professionally stolen' seems questionable at this point.
Perhaps the usual standby, 'Officer, there is NO way I left the key in the ignition with the car on," followed by the police finding the car in the hands of a 15-year-old who ran out of gas and doesn't quite know how to work the ignition switch anyway.

All this talk of stealing Jaguars in the Durham area - must put a stop to this.

Hold on - it's Durham in North Carolina and not the ancient City of Durham in the North of England .......
..... CARRY ON.
Graham
We, in the US, have 22 Durhams. Canada has 2. Amidst all of our North American plenty, must have missed the outlier in the UK.

It's interesting stuff though
