Default Rare love for 722.6

We all know that the Mercedes 722.6 transmission used in the 4.0 XKR’s is one of the best transmissions to ever be used in any X-100. But decades have passed since the automotive press have sung the 722.6’s praises.

Which is why I about fell over in astonishment when I saw it was included in a short article about the 5 most durable automotive transmissions

https://www.jalopnik.com/2006552/most-reliable-transmissions/

on a personal note, the 722.6 was one of deciding factors when I was trying to decide between the XK8 and the XKR

Dipstick versus wait til the ATF runs out of the filler (you can guess which is which)? In terms of reliability there doesn't seem to be anything in it between the ZF6 and the Mercedes, although you do get the chirp for free on the ZF.. Realistically though when choosing which XK8/R to buy, the overall condition of the car, if it is in the colour(s) you want and whether the roof opens or not are more important than whether it has a ZF6hp26 or 722.6 transmission. All these cars are 20+ years old, so theoretical advantages when they left the factory are pretty much just that now - theoretical.

Rightly or wrongly, the posts on this forum of A drum failures with the 4.0 XK8 transmission scared me off.

A dipstick for my car would be nice for the transmission.
