I would say it is under the fuses and relays.

Under the fusebox was the locking & security module at the rear of the trunk was the adaptive control module, above the cd-changer in the trunk is another module but judging by the connectors isnt the lamp control module, since in the 2001 diagram there appears to be no Lamp control module I can only assume that it is as in the 2001 model and has only the SLCM (Security and Locking Control Module), next question is whether its something that can be easily reset by Jaguar or could it be a wiring issue?

Default rear lights not working here either

Hi All, I have the same problem with my 2000 XJ8 just this week. The "rear Lights" warning sign came on & I had my son check..a brake light was out..put that in and next time I checked and found only the break light is working. The other 3 lights in the same panel are not working. I assume these are the running light, fog lights (yellow) & backup.
I've checked fuses & relays and all are working.
I don't see that the previous owner was able to find a solution. Did I miss a post? I would appreciate any help you have on this. Thanks

rear light module likely burned. mine was caused by 45 watt bulbs in the 7 watt rear driving light sockets.i ran grounds from tail light metal backing plate to body also. find problem or next module will burn too!

the module is a little bigger than a pack of cigarettes. it is to the rear of the battery.

I really appreciate your help on this. I think I found the module, behind the battery. When I take the black cover off I see 4 posts w/bolts and what looks like 2 fuses marked 250A..? As we're playing musical cars I won't have much time until the weekend to search further. I appreciate any help.

This is the XK8 forum...you should to go to the XJ8 forum for the best help.

And those 250 Amp power mains fuses are not what you are looking for.

my tail lights didnt work. the lamp control module(in fuse box to the rear of the battery-it has a yellow lever-lock plug attached to it) had a few burned ?resistors. you can see and smell them. did the novice thing and put a new module in-it burned up too. THEN i discovered the forum. i checked the grounding tabs-looked pristine. i think the seller replaced them as everything looked new. i grounded the backing plate to the nearest bolt to be sure.on final check i found 45 watt bulbs where the 7 watt tail lights should be-same size socket. installed new bulbs and module- so good. interestingly no dash warning light comes on with the module burned. hope this helps

Smile 2000 XJ8 tail lights out

Hi John,
Thank you for all your help. It turned out that my left brake bulb needed replacement as that bulb has 2 filaments, 1 for the brake which was working & 1 for the tail lights, which was broken. As soon as I replaced that my tail lights were good to go. Glad it wasn't anything more serious.
