Rear speaker replacement
I am looking to replace my rear speakers in my 99xk8 that appear to be on their last leg. I found this post and wanted to know if anyone else has elected to do the same. My major concern are the specs on the factory speakers 2 or 4 ohm and the size.

Gus.. I just put my KICKER 10CVT654 4Ohm speakers in last week. I looked around the forum and found both 2 and 4's installed. So i just went with 4 ( gotta be better than 2 riight?) They sound great!!! I was not wanting anymore "thump" than what the originals were and these did the trick. Easy install as long as you have a DREMIL tool to cut off the plastic edge of the speaker ring. They will not fit with them. But easy to remove and they hide so you can't see how choppy my cutting was!
Now my car is off to the body shop all next week to get the nice dent someone put in it and take care of all the little scratches that i have accumulated.

Not the BOX but the speaker itself! It has a top plastic ring around the entire speaker that is also molded into the speaker housing. But a little trim around the edge to cut it back to the metal will allow speaker to drop right into place where the original was! And the bolt holes line up perfect! Very neat and tidy!

The original are soldered in. I cut them are the point of connection to the older speaker. Then I stripped back the covering to expose about 1/4 inch of wire. The KICKERS have connectors on the speakers to that all you need to do is depress the spring load and then it will open the hole to insert the wire and then release to grab it. Simple! No hassle connections!

I installed the speakers today. It was a little tricky installing them but I got it done in short order. I removed the outer plastic ring from the Kickers (to fit) and removed the inner ring from the old speakers and installed the new speakers with the ring from the old ones. I will post my install on my revised web page. Thanks for your help and direction. I got the speakers from Amazon and they sound great.

Gus, Nice catch on those speakers from Amazon---I saw them as well for what looked like a very good price. Did the Kickers elevate the bass by a large margin as opposed to the OEM? I've got a '06 premium system but it seems to lack a good bass response--be interested to see if the Kickers really stepped up the sound quality.

How do I say this? The base was clear along with the mid tones. And the clarity was much better than before even when the speakers were good. In my opinion it was a GREAT modification and would recommend it to others. As for adding additional BOOM to the base it does that and more. You do need to understand that the enclosures for the speaker are not designed for excessive BOOM.

It would be interesting to see if someone could 'construct' a larger box (volume-wise) that could take a larger sealed sub...say an 8", low profile of course.
The sidewalls of the OEM box is rather thin and flimsy too, if you have the time, and capability, stiffening it up with either a fiberglass wrap, or building a new one out of MDF would give you much more bass response, even on the scale of these small speakers.
