Default Rear wheel free play

Hi guys,
I’ve got my car up on stands and checking the rear wheels for play both have a slight movement when I push and pull the top and bottom. It’s about 1 to 2mm.

there is no side to side movement and the fronts are fine.

is this normal?

Thanks
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
I'm afraid that's not OK. It's a sure sign of wheel bearing wear.
I've heard a lot worse though and the UK MOT spec is a bit ambiguous in what amount of play is acceptable..... how much is excessive ?!

Kevin,
Read this thread from the X300 forum:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ptable-241036/

Something else just crossed my mind. Your play condition could also be due to wear in the Universal Joint/s because these have a dual role and act as the upper suspension arm - same principle as the e-type shown in this diagram.

You have to take the differential output shaft end float into consideration

Push the wheel / shaft assembly INWARDS. Zero a Dial Indicator on the diff output flange.

Pull the wheel / shaft assembly OUTWARDS. Note the reading.

Check against the specification;

0 to 0,15 mm GOOD.

0,15 mm + NOT GOOD; Renew the output shaft bearing

I do have slight 12-6 movement also, fortunately local MOT does not consider them as issue because there is no 9-3 movement at all (apparently Corvette does have similar issues and rear structure).
Although what parts exactly to inspect/change to remove play would be nice to know as I am planning to drop rear package on next winter.

I would go so far as to say it is quite normal to have 1 or 2 mm play when measured at the top of the wheel. It will not be apparent with car back on the ground and inward load back on diff output shaft bearings.
l replaced those bearings some years ago because of this free play and brand new bearings made virtually no difference.

That's a Big Ole Bearing....It will have to move a little! When it starts to make Noise is when you need to replace.....
