Frank,

A disapppointing response after your careful instructions to the (potential) supplier. At least your originals were returned undamaged.

The later XK uses a similar metal/rubber combination waist rail seal. However, it is considerably more robust than the earlier XK version and replacement cost is a fraction at 90 UKP. If you do decide to have another go, it could be useful to find out who makes these for Jaguar.

Came late to the thread, but add me to the list of part-time aluminium scrapers and XK8 owners looking for as sensibly priced solution.

Frankc,

Any update on the seals. The day is fast approaching when I’m going to need your repair guide☹️

Thanks

Question XKR window waist seals

Hi Chaps, I have a 2004 XKR coup, and the passenger side window waist seal has just about had it, I am wondering if the XJ seal itself is the same as on the XK8 and the shape is given by the metal outer strip.
If anyone has any other ideas or solutions then I think there will be a lot of XK8 owners deeply indebted?
Has anyone had any luck with getting seals manufactured?

I haven't heard anything. I would like to replace mine to but there isn't any realistic repair job.

The Mini R53 waist seal is near identical, and around a tenner from the breakers.

Thanks. Do you have an exact part number? I found this, Jaguar XK8-R Window Waist Trim Rubber Seal Kit | eBay it's not aluminium but just the seal. I guess it will be better then nothing.

Thumbs up XK8 waist window seal

Hi Sossy, I have just seen your post saying that a mini R52 part is almost the same, can you tell me if you have fitted one and what is the difference if any?
Many thanks

You want to search for "BMW Mini Cooper One R50 R52 R53 Outer Weatherstrip Front Door O/S Chrome". I have fitted them and they certainly look better. However, issues I've had (possibly due to my lack of fettling skills) are as follows:
1/ You do have to cut them to size, they come with removable plastic end-caps and these can be re-used with modification.
2/ They are not as tall as the Jag originals and you can see the inside of the inner window seals through the windows. Also, they do not create a perfect seal against the window; towards the rear of the door I can slip a playing card in the gap between the seal and the window.
3/ I have a convertible and did the quarter seals as well but struggled to get them to line up well (vertically) with the door seals. If doing quarter seals as well you can get away with just buying 3 BMW seals and cutting to suit.

Thumbs up

Thanks, Robin, I will have a look at one at a Mini scrap yard near me, I also want to have a look at the seals on the XJ to see what they look like, maybe they will be the same height as the originals, I will report back on this as soon as.
Thanks again
Bob

Late to respond but I'm in need of these trim pieces as well and would love to find them at a reasonable price!

Coincidentally, the latest episode of To The Garage (“Secrets of the XK8, Episode 99”) talks all about these “waist seals”, how they’re constructed, and how they fail.

John mentions he has found an alternative replacement for his (which look pretty nice), and says he will give details of what they are and where he found them in a future episode (starting around the 10-minute mark; he’s a bit mysterious about it).

Anyway, if you’re not desperate right now, it might be worth keeping an eye on his channel for that “future episode”, or trying to contact him to ask.

John Dee to the rescue…

My X100 seals are fine, so the question is, will this work for my ‘02 X308?
