Default REV counter

Hi there I have just purchased an XKR year 2000
REV counter does nothing, still drives (says its in reduced capacitiy mode) im paraphrasing but i take it this is the limp home mode any advice where to start

Previous owner says they installed a new battery (wrong size but car runs) and this fault came up

Runs and drives smoothly if you're gentle on the throttle
Boot it and it chokes up at 45mph, let of the throttle and boot it and it'll make it to 80mph amd Choke again

Cruise control works still, and shifts nicely but no rev counter at any

New to the forum thank you for having me I'm sure I'll return with many more stupid questions.

Help yourself by filling more details in your profile (& post an intro in the newbie section) - and stay away from a dealer as long as you can because if people here don't know then a dealer also won't.

You're liable to need a proper battery but I somewhat doubt that's your current problem(s?).

I'm surprised JagV8 didn't tell you to read the codes that go with the restricted performance message - once you are sure you have a fully working battery based on something more than what the previous owner told you.

Read the codes, get a new battery, do a hard reset, drive the car and read the codes again.

How does one do a hard reset?

I've got all the codes
P0304 misfire on cylinder 4
P0354 ignition coil D/secondry circuit

P1313 (believe has something to do with the 02
sesnors)
P1316 (injector circ IDM) is this the fuel relay error?
P1646 (code reader doesn't tell me what that was, think it may have been another misifre or emissions warning)

I've got the old battery on charge going to plug in to see if anything changes

It's just a bigger battery though still 12v

Secondly says nothing about rev counter fault where would I start looking in regards to the rev counter not working

On start up it slightly twitchs doesn't twitch enough to read a number and then just stays at rest

Here are the code definitions from the 2000 EG:

Your first two indicate an issue with ignition for cylinder A4. Plug? Coil? Try swopping the coil with another cylinder and see if the fault follows the move (clear the codes beforehand). I've included P0300 & P0351 for reference

Second pair related to the misfire, warning a risk of catalytic convertor damage if the fault persists.

P1646 as described.

Hard reset. Member Gus explains how, with pictures:

Not sure on the rev. counter, but it's not likely related and of less importance at this stage

Fix the P1646 (new Denso O2 sensor needed most likely) and yes swap coil to see if fault moves.

For your rev counter, as the others have said concentrate on fixing the other faults first, but if you have a code reader that can show live data (such as an OBD dongle with the Torque app) you can see what RPM the car is reporting. I would imagine that will show that the fault with your rev counter is in the instrument pack itself - maybe you need a new one.

Is that a new code or did you have it before and didn't mention it?

Measure the resistance between pins 6 and 14 at the OBD connector (with the ignition off). It should be 60 ohms. Maybe you have an intermittent short or other problem on the CAN bus. The instrument pack is at one end of that bus.

There is a known fault with the earlier instrument packs:-

Hi all so I've replaced the melted coil pack and the code for a faulty ignition coil in the same place has come up again after 300 miles

I'm wondering if the coils are some how related to the ecu code fault

Where do I start check the wires?

P1313/P1316 are likely to do with severe misfires and causing catalyst damage. The O2 sensor code (P1646) means you need to fix the O2-related problem and soon if you don't want also to be replacing cat(s).

Separately - I'd try swapping coils round now they should be OK, to see if the fault follows or not.
