Default Sport mode and 6th gear question

Not sure if this is something that's always been the case for my XK, whether its meant to be this way, or if things have recently changed. The issue is when using the sport mode 6th gear doesn't seem ever to be selected; gets to 5th and there it stays even when cruising at 60-65mph for several miles. De-selecting sport and the revs drop a few hundred and 6th gear gets a look in. Push the button again to select sport once again, and without moving my right foot, down it changes, as if its ready for you to bury the accelerator to the fluffy stuff.

I'm not too bother what gear I'm in really, but if its a sign things ain't right I obviously need to sort pdq.

Fingers are crossed you're all going to reply saying its normal...!!!

Jules

Sport Mode
Sport mode is selected with the Mode Switch on the
J-gate. The Sport mode strategy allows upshifts to occur
at higher engine speeds and downshifts at lower pedal
angles. Sport mode remains engaged until Normal mode
is selected or Cruise Control is engaged. If Cruise
Control is engaged while Sport mode is selected, Sport
mode is resumed when Cruise Control is disengaged.
Various adaptive strategies can override Sport mode.
NOTE:
In Sport mode, 6th gear will be inhibited when
the vehicle is driven aggressively (N/A engines > 20%
throttle opening; SC engines > 35%). Furthermore,
consistent aggressive driving may prompt the adoption
of a shift strategy in which 6th gear is unavailable. This

is not a fault.

Not the car's fault, but it apparently IS the driver's fault.

Guess you've been having a little too much fun.

Good for you.

What are you doing cruising at that speed for several miles - trying to get us a bad reputation?

Don't count myself as an aggressive driver, but obviously am according to the lily livered TCM! At least I know its not a fault. Phew...!!!

Graham, I live in Devon. Its August. There are 438 millions grockles that have come down to holiday here with their motorhomes, caravans, bicycles and transits. To be honest I think I was lucky to cruise anything above 4 mph!!

Seriously, thanks for your replies.

Jules

A question relevant to the "S" mode: does engaging the S mode stiffens up the suspension at all?

I have a question. In the 5 speed cars, does S mode inhibit 5th gear?

It normally does not, although there are ways to make it do so.

It is noticable, but in reality the difference between "soft" and "firm" in these cars is not that large.

In Sport mode, my 6th gear doesn't kick in until 75mph. Looking at my revs, it would be inefficient if it kicked in sooner. You do realize these cars have a top speed capped at 155mph. That's what 6th gear is for. Going FAST. lol

Nope, nothing wrong. 6th gear just doesn't get used much.

Does anyone have the stats on fuel consumption between D mode and S mode?

The D or S mode selection itself isn't going to make a huge difference. Consumption will depend on how heavily you press the 'GO' pedal and you're always going to be pushing harder when you select Sport mode!

Thanks for the thread bump. Actually 75mph isn't fast enough... it's somewhere between 80-85... I haven't paid attention recently, but I did pay attention after typing 75mph.

Just thought I'd fyi. lol
