There is a strut adaptor for this job that makes it less lethal. JD 226, I paid $25 on eBay for mine.

Hello @stevepaa
Do you have a brand name or location where to get these spring compressors? I like the look.
FYI, I always use 3 compressors as it helps to center the spring in the shock and allow the mount to slip on easier.
