Default Steering column shaft coupler ujoint

Whatever you call it, I think I need a new one. Works fine but looks like hell. Anyone know what other models and years will fit my 2004 XKR?

Try to clean it up. That may be just surface rust....

Default As it’s working, just try to Wire brush it first

+1 to Jon89

Looks like just surface rust. Plenty of bits on the car that looks like this. Exhaust, prop shafts etc but are just fine.

Wire brush it, and see what the remaining surface looks like. To make it look better there’s plenty of combined primer&paint single application stuff available. Just make sure it can take heat.

Not named in JEPC or JTIS as it's part of the lower steering column but can certainly be described as a Universal Joint.

I agree with the earlier comments about cleaning it up. No need to go looking for trouble with a Jaguar!

I would guess that all the X100 to 2006? would be the same part number.

Here is a TSB we got and I replaced MANY for the 'knock' in both the XK and XJ.

Thanks, that’s reassuring. I’ll certainly try putting a wire brush to it but it would be nice to have a spare just in case. What’s confusing is all the conflicting information on compatibility. The part number is MJE 9503AC. Prior to 2004, it is MJE 9503AB for XK models. XJ’s have very different numbers even though they all look the same to me. Some parts companies list wide-ranging compatibility despite the different numbers. Not sure what to make of it.

Does the part number supersede????????

Just because a part number is associated with an older part does NOT mean it did not get a slight update and a new part number.

A part from 1990 might still be available but the number has CHANGED!!!

Mine started off like this.

But after a citric acid bath looked like this.

The U joint is not available separately on is only supplied complete with a mew lower steering column.

So, given the above information, plus this:

I’m thinking I should try a used piece from an older XK

That is the wrong part for your car, there are two different lower steering columns.

You need the one with a spine at both sides.

Thanks for the clarification. Now if only I could find one at a reasonable cost...

Default Lower steering column - is my exchange part faulty?

Hello,

I have a question regarding the lower steering rack. I have the old version installed in my car that is causing me the known "konck" problem. Since the part is not available from Jaguar anymore I found and purchased a used one. I received it today and noticed that the lower metal rod is out of center (maybe bent?) - see attached pics. Since do not I have an old part to compare and this is not clearly visible from the photos I found on the internet I would like to know if someone could help me figure it out. The dealer assured me that it was taken from a non accident car but I would like to go sure before changing a faulty old part against a new faulty part

Many thanks and best regards

Marko

From this perspective the rod is straight.

When turned 90 degrees the rod is out of center

After some research I figured out that the steering column was bent. I was able to get it straightened out by a shop that fixes motorcycles. Hope it solves my “knock” problem.

Does anyone on the forum know of a suitable replacement for this lower u-joint piece? Maybe someone is designing/making one ?

If you do take it off the trick is to remove the bolt then put a piece of thick feeler gauge or knife blade in the slot and put the bolt back in the threaded side and tighten. This will open the joint so you can get it off . Mark for straight ahead position

Sourcing a replacement universal joint shouldn't be that difficult, Jaguar don't manufacture those components and will source them from someone like Borgeson.

Since you have the shaft in hand it would be really useful if you could get the measurements for that shaft assembly and components (e.g. Shaft diameter, spline count and UJ body length). You can probably source everything you need to completely rebuild that shaft assembly as new, or maybe even better than the original.

Borgeson are on https://www.borgeson.com/shafting.html

Alternatively you could contact NSK directly, from an earlier image it looks like it may be one of theirs https://www.nskamericas.com/en/produ...te-shafts.html

Interesting to see the weird hardened goo at the top of the steering rack pinion shaft housing earlier in this thread that looks identical to my steering rack. I will now chalk that down to "they all do that" and try not to worry about it lol.
