Default Tibbe key replacement

I have two key/fob sets, but managed to misplace one. I've been living in fear of losing the remaining key and finally searched for a (reasonable) source. I found a listing on eBay for an Australian company that can cut Tibbe keys from your code OR a couple of sharp photos, which is what I sent them. It costs about AU$38, but I had to add on about US$23 for postage. As of this posting my key is severals days overdue, although I can track it online. Not very cheap, but worth it for the peace of mind. I'll update this post when I receive the new key. The listing was : https://www.ebay.com/itm/131634745068

I have one key with key fob, and one Valet key. I would love to have another fob.

Not so sure about getting it done remotely. I had mine done at a key shop. After they made the key it did not work. They had to modify the key a number of times before it worked.

hope they arrive soon. However, a quick search of the forum marketplace for keyword tibbe, would have provided forum member @Sone information on his ability to cut tibbe keys for forum members

If it is just the fob you want, then it's a Ford part on the later cars and much easier & cheaper to find. Search on the FCC ID printed on your existing fob.

edit: LJE2610AC is Jaguar's part # (for 315MHz USA version)

I bought fobs off Amazon for my 2002 xk8. 2 Pcs Replacement Car Key Fob Keyless Entry Remote Control fit for Ford Focus Explorer Mazda Mercury Lincoln Tribute 4-Button (Replaces CWTWB1U212, CWTWB1U331, GQ43VT11T, CWTWB1U345) (3-Button) https://a.co/d/ifpbrV8

I only have 1 key which will start the car however so I would love to get another. I have 2 extra keys, but they only unlock the car.

I purchased 2 cloneable Tibbe keys from an ebay vendor, I found a local mobile locksmith that could cut and clone (not program) the new keys, they work well. 1998 xk8 (x100)

Since we are on the topic of programming keys. Can someone talk about the process of programming a new key with IDS? Do you have to do all keys at once? If so, does that make them all masters...meaning you can clone them? I understand there is a limit of 5 keys...does that include the valet?

the program process is pretty easy to follow. All keys need to be there. The fob type keys will program as masters. The valets not sure. When i did mine ids said 4 keys total programmed. I have 2 flip fob keys and 2 valets. So yes the valets count to the total as far as i understand it. I think the main diff between valet and fob key is the end of the key. The valet is more square so it will not open glovebox or trunk. I ground my valets to match the fob keys and they work everything now

My new replacement key arrived from Australia and it works perfectly. It's a relief to know I won't be frantically looking for a locksmith if I lose my only key.

Is there a reference showing which keys work with which VIN ranges? There seems to be a lot of conflicting information on keys that work with the XK8. I have one working ignition key. My valet key opens the door, but doesn't start the car. Also, is there a way to identify which keys you have (not the cutting, but the transponder version)? Perhaps there is something under the logo?

To my knowledge, the "cut of" is 2001.

Cars pre-2001 have the one-off fob not compatible with anything else. The anti-theft transponder is the Megamos 13, except the '97 in the US that does not have anything. To my superficial knowledge, these older Megamos chips can somehow be "cloned" with the proper tools.

Cars 2001 and later have a Ford-compatible fob with tons of options, including the flip-style of the S-Type. The anti-theft chip is the Megamos 48.

As you probably know, you cannot just add a key or fob to the car. You have to add them all in one session. IOW, going into the procedure to add a fob or key deletes all existing entries in the car's memory. Folks typically forget the valet key during that process and now it is out of sync, so to speak.

PS: The "great" news if you are curious is that the entire transponder setup was cracked/reverse engineered by security researchers, originally targeted at some VW models. Their paper is available online and makes for a great read.

Best of luck, keep us posted.
