Default trans fluid level 1999 XK8

In the process of refilling trans what is correct and where is it documented?
Should the car be level or should the transmission be level.
If it is the transmission is to be level it will take more fluid to fill.
It seems to me ZF would require transmission to be level because
each different car model may sit at a different angle?

Glenn, plenty of posts about this here. Can you do searches? One of the most important things about filling it is getting the temperature right, but you'll see that's in the instructive posts.

Have filled transmission with correct ZF fluid and drained at correct temp without problems.
But now am questioning if filling with the transmission on level was correct?
Have known it to be done both ways, car level and trans level

The procedure in the factory manual JTIS 21 calls for the car to be level.

FWIW I found the driver's door still to be the best place to put a level. Not too many flat surfaces parallel to the ground.

All of the info read and seen in the past says car should be level , checked on sill or below sill.
But came across one video where tech puts a level on transmission after pan is removed.
Made more sense to me? It does take more fluid this way and required the rear of car to
be raised up a lot, to level transmission. Don"t know how critical fluid level is. Had an XJ6
that when overfilled 1/2 quart would spew it out. Don't think the XK8 has an overflow vent.

Hi Glenn,

Attached is one of the Jaguar documents that describes how to set the fluid level in the 5HP24, and yes, it specifies that the vehicle should be on a level surface.

Cheers,

Don

Don
Thank you very much this was the info I was looking for. Will now have to drain off excess fluid.
Thanks again

"Position the vehicle on a level surface" is the correct way to level the car.

That's going back a few years to quote a previous post. 😉
