Default Trans fluid level check

Had the tranny fluid changed at last service. Only 34k on clock at time, but 11 years old, so seemed sensible. Prior to service no problems with gear change at all. 6 months down the line, Ive been getting the dreaded surging on warm up plus lumpy downshifts from 3rd to 1st.

Found out the Jag 'specialist' replaced the original fluid with Millermatic ATF at £5 per ltr, so am going to replace with ZF Lifeguard 6. Am hoping this will clear this issues! However, the question I really have is how much should drain out once I pull the drain plug? Im not sure if the right amount was filled at service, so by just replacing what comes out I could repeat an under or over fill. Will leave it overnight to drain but if it was filled correctly how much should drain from this procedure?

My plan is to drain, and assuming (say) 6 ltrs that comes out is correct, i'll replace with 6 ltrs, drive, drain again, then replace with another 6 ltrs.

Need to know how much trans fluid to order tho.

I recall getting between 3 and 4 l. from a drain. It will take several changes to eliminate the existing fluid.

Drained ZF ATF amounts seem to vary somewhat. Several forum members who have allowed their ZFs to drain overnight have reported more than 7 litres trickled out. When we drained my wife's 2006 XK8 in July 2013, we got right at 6 litres out of it....

Refill properly, not by the amount that came out. For all you know the wrong amount was put in or some may have leaked out.

Plenty of people are using Millermatic without problems so you may be disappointed if you replace it.

True. This isn't too expensive an option vs new TC or tranny, so gonna give it a go. Just seemed coincidental it all started after it was put in. Could just be the wrong level, so no harm in putting ZF back in and checking its right amount. Ordering 15 litres from Bristol Transmissions at £15.60 per ltr and hope this will be enough to do two complete drains and refills.

15 should be plenty. Hope it works out. Remember to check level when it's fairly hot. A bit painful.
