Default Transmission

I have a 2005 Jag XK8 with 100K mi. I've read the transmission could lock anytime & must be replaced, no repair possible. Does anyone have a guess as to the odds of this happening?

With this little information, it is going to be hard to help you out. Can you post some detail? Symptoms, codes, behavior...

The earlier (pre 2003) 5 speed transmissions had some problems but your 6 speed is pretty reliable. So I wouldn't worry too much.
At 100k it should have had a fluid / filter change so that's something to consider.

Wherever did you read that?

In actuality seems to be wrong. A million to one?

In all seriousness, if you service your car as prescribed, I wouldn't lose any sleep about the gearbox locking up (never heard of this). From what I have read, a fluid change around 100k is all that may be needed.

Just drive it and enjoy it!

Just shows that the internet is a dangerous place, you can find 'proof' of anything if you look hard enough

Actually I'm not having trouble with the transmission yet, just the suspension (that's another problem). But someone mentioned "expect transmission problems" & a member of our Jag Club found scary info on the internet. The replies I've gotten have eased my angst.

If the suspension issues aren't covered in other threads... start a new one

I'm not sure if your transmission is a "sealed for life transmission" or not. But, I inquired with the jag dealer about a fluid/filter change on my 01 xk8 as I have been having some minor, and sporadic, shifting problems going into 2nd gear. The dealer said that since my transmission is sealed there is no need to change fluid. They said the fluid is quite expensive and costly to change out. They said if no fault codes are being displayed there is no reason to change it. Basically just drive the thing until it breaks, there is no real preventive maintenance needed.

No such animal as a "sealed for life" transmission regardless of the manufacturer. The more appropriate moniker is "sealed for death" if you do not at least properly drain-and-fill with fresh ATF periodically....

Disappointing but unsurprising that dealers are still peddling that BS. If it were true, there would be no need for the drain plug.

Even ZF finally relented on a max. age (IIRC 8 years) irrespective of mileage (at least for the 5HP24)
