Wanting a guess or estimate on labor cost
Just wanted to know if anyone could give me a rough estimate on the labor cost to replace my entire engine and transmission in my 97 Jaguar xk8 coup???? I already have the motor and transmission and I know a mechanic but wanted to find out about how much the labor should cost normally????? Thanks

Welcome to the forums Noel,

I swapped out a BMW engine and transmission in a day. But that’s home DIY with a friend. So let’s say it’s 8 hours at Approx USD100 per hour.
So a labour charge of around USD800 seems a reasonable base fee to start with. However there’s always the possibility of unforeseen f£&k ups which will delay things and cost more. Always some extra parts are needed. For me it was the motor mounts, coolant pipes, and the rusted bolts on the f£&king prop shaft.
Well worth shopping around at your local Indie garages to check their charge rates and also gauge their expertise. Free lance mechanics, working at indie garages, probably paid for their own training, and are sometimes expected to have their own tools. So the charge rates can sometimes surprise people.... someone needs to pay for their training and tool kits.

Depends also on what you want to do
Best of luck, keep us posted.
- Do you want to take advantage of the new engine on the stand to do all the preventative maintenance upfront? Chains/tensioners, valley hoses, seals and o-rings? rebuild of the transmission (A-drum and transgo valve)? Injector service? Throttle body and intake cleanup? Heater pump rebuild?
- Do you have a "naked" engine and all the accessories have to be transferred (alternator, power steering, etc.)?
- Is the engine the exact same (AJ26 from an XK8) or is it only similar (AJ27 from another model)?
- Do you trust the new engine/trans combo is up to par?
Best of luck, keep us posted.
Jaguar warranty time for engine and transmission assembly, remove for access and install is about 7 hours.
A 'real-world' estimate would be warranty times-time-and-a-half (7.0 x 1.5= 10.5 hours)
If you need to transfer components from one assembly to the other you should add more time.
12 to 15 hours would be a fair guess??
