What's this thingy..
Be careful with theese "grilles"... its parts of a quite complicated aucustic sensor system that detects if you are sitting in the seat and if you are strapped in.
In the seat there are a pressure sensor that detects if you are sitting there. Underneith the seat cusion there is a flat bag with some kind of a silicone gel that when the bag gets compressed are pushing this gel towards a pressure swich.
The Pressure switch has two levels.
On the passengerside A-pillar there is also a little sensor that looks like a speakergrille.. same thing, a acoustic tranceiver.
On the center console in the roof, same thing.. a big grille with two tranceivers behind.
Then there is ofcourse switches in the seatbelt recepticles.
If you turn the ignition on and buckle up in the passenger seat, the little airbag light on the passenger dash (on the woodpanel) should be out. Lean forwad and the lamp should come on -Indicating that the airbag is disconnected, this is so you dont get whacked to DEATH if the airbag goes of with your head in the way.... that panel WILL smack you to kingdom come!
When the airbag sensing system does not detect anyone in the passenger seat, it also should disconnect the passenger airbag... to prevent the passenger airbag to go of if you have a small accident when alone in the car... So when you stumble out of the car, smacked in the face by the steering wheel airbag, inspecting your crashed car.. atleast you can comfort yourself with the fact that you dont have to pay for a new passenger airbag..
-I have a minor problem with this system, when alone in the car the dash airbag light goes out, but passenger side airbag light comes on indication that the pasenger airbag is off. If someone sits there it goes out again... So i beleive that the pressure sensor in the seat detects a small person there..
So be careful with thoose sensors.. if this system gets messed up... you are going to spend some time troubleshooting..
