Default Windscreen - RESOLVED

Out on a nice drive today when all of a sudden a 5inch crack appears in the bottom n/s windscreen, lucky enough my insurance covers the cost of replacement😊👍booked in for Wednesday, I understand this not a easy job and involves more than just the glass being sealed down ie clips ,interea mirror and rain sensor reattached,it's one of the top uks reputable screen fitting company's assigned to my insurance so my hopes are high, lol were have we heard that before, anyhow my question to anyone that's been in the same situation is what to expect, thay have all the full details of the car so I hope I get the original spec of glass, anything I need to watch out for during fitting as knowing my luck I will get the spotted pezza faced pimpled little apprentice fitter😠

Default Someone recently said that that windscreen (WS) plastic scuttle broke

A thing to look out for is that another Forum member said that the plastic scuttle, with the wipers, broke when they had WS changed. Part is NLA.... bugger

Use the time the glass is out to secure the defroster vent if its lose. Very hard to reach with glass in place.

Have them go slow and careful/gentle when removing the plastic edge covers on left/right side of outside of windscreen.

Keep an eye on the plastic finish cover that goes on the bottom to of the rear view mirror mounting (lost mine, none would notice but hey - you asked:-)).

Nothing else comes to mind.

The head lining can get damaged when cutting out the glass if not carefull..the window trim should come off in one peace not two halves... make sure he dosnt fit the new one to high (happen'd to mine and had to get it refitted weeks later)... be prepared to do a quick fix on any rust under the window before the new is fitted..make sure he dosnt trap the washer tube under the scuttle.. check washers work after new window fitted also rain sensor works..ask the fitter how many windows he has fitted in jaguar xk8/r hopefully he has done this before..ALL the above by other members.

Photograph the vehicle immediately before they start work. Close ups of windscreen trims and surrounding bodywork to confirm perfection or indicate any existing paint damage; headliner and post trims for (absence of) marks. You then have a reference for any subsequent "discussions".

The last windscreen I had replaced was in my X300. This was covered by insurance and carried out at my local branch of Autoglass who seem to be the insurers favourite in the UK. I asked to watch the process which was agreed and they did a careful and excellent job.

Default Windscreen update

Just a update on my windscreen refitting, the crack was due to a very small amount of rust under the bottom n/s edge of the screen just under the screen surround know as a stress crack,my fitter Chris who had 30years experience (thank god) from autoglass did a superb job that took around 2 hours,he let me watch all the work being done, what a guy😊he truly went the extra mile in my opinion to do a brilliant job by also sanding back and rust treating and priming the area👍the technology used in fitting the glass was class,on top of this I also get a full lifetime warranty for replacement ,happy days😆

Well done. Having loads of experience is so crucial for a proper windshield replacement job. I always insist that Safelite sends me the most experienced tech they have available that day....

I developed a crack in the windshield a few years ago. I took it to Safelite. Had a great tech who took out the windshield and found rust was the reason for the crack. They don't do body work. I had to have the car towed back home.

I had to fix this.....

And this..

After I fixed the rust, they came to my house and replaced the windshield. They did a great job.
