Default Wood dash needs to be fixed or replaced?

I have some scratches on the wood piece above the glove box, is this easy to fix or remove and place another one?

I know the wood may be hard to match up perfectly?

Will the airbag present a big problem?

Picture is not of my car btw

Thanks!

If they are light scratches, and easy to get to (not close to edges) you will not need to remove the panel, there is quite a thick layer of lacquer, get some 1500 wet n dry and rub the scratches down until you can no longer see them, then buff the panel with some rubbing compound (I use 3G), comes up a treat.

You will be hard pushed to get a match if you try to replace, the veneers are made from one length of wood and to obtain the same piece is neigh on impossible, you can get a close match but even on really cracked and flaking lacquers I have had good results by simply removing the lacquer (if its flaking it comes off easy otherwise its a PITA) and then going over with 2K clear lacquer.

The alternative is to adopt the piano black finish and paint them all, thats one of my favs (not a big wood fan)

If the panel needs to be repaired just remove it & send it here. They do all the wood repairs for the Jaguar dealers.

I can't see that you would be able to match up a new section as they all seem so unique. I would try the repair methodology and if that didn.t work out, look to replace all the veneer with a new set

If the scratches are in the finish and not to the wood a light sanding and or the use of compound is the right application. If the scratch is into the wood then consider another approach.

What is flaky the finish or the wood, if it is the wood sanding might be a problem. Veneer wood is a thin layer of wood applied to another surface and can be sanded to non existence if you are not careful. I have been working with wood for many years and if you are not careful you can do more damage than you think.

The wood is mostly OK, the varnish is flaking slightly. Probably due the the previous owners enjoying the endless Mexican summer with the top down.

I have worked with wood a fair amount on sailing yachts, and I promise to be super cautious and careful. I haven't really any choice, something has to be done to stop it worsening.

I understand and hope the best when you start working with it. I have worked with veneer, made and finished furniture for years as a hobby. I created many problems for myself when not paying attention to what I was doing and only wished to express a concern and awareness. If you are comfortable with it go for it.

My wife and I have frequented Playa del Carmen several times and love the area and the town. And if you go into Carlos & Carlies in town you will see my shirt with my name on it fastened to the ceiling.

JgaXkr is correct about Jaguar using the Madera Concepts for veneer repair.

Here is the TSB for the introduction of the repair program started in the late 1990s.

Note that the prices are NOT CURRENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
