Default XK8 2002 stereo trouble - RESOLVED

Hi all.
Sorry if had all this before but my xk8 stereo all works as normal but no sound🤔
I had someone out to look at it and was told it's the radio.so I have got the same radio cassette type and model fitted it and exactly the same?
Now I am no tech wiz. And he tells me the amp is in the stereo on this type?
He said there is no other amp.
I did have a look above the cd changer by pulling back the panel a bit and could not see a amp above the changer.
Has anybody any idea please.?
So so far I have paid a man to come a diagnose it as a fault with the stereo.
And purchased a replacement and still nothing.
Everything works just no sound 😖

Welcome to the forum Tgk9,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XK8/XKR forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

check the selector switch on the head unit is set to standard, not premium (you need to remove unit to check) and also check all plugs are inserted fully. I think there should be one circular din lead and two rectangular plugs.

i have removed stereo and switch on standered all plugs located securely but still no sound. Also done the same with the new stereo I purchased that was on prenup so changed to standered but still no sound. Def no amp above cd changer.
Very confused 😔

Just to be clear - when you say "works as normal" that is .........

Lights come on on radio panel.
Aerial (antenna) goes up (and down) when switched on and off.
Cassette / Radio / CD player all function as they should.
Fader / balance / Treble & Bass etc buttons all function as expected.
You don't have tweeters on the doors (inside) near the rear-view mirror.

But ................ no sound AT ALL from any speakers on either radio, cassette, or CD ?

Yes ?

Solution was to close up very slightly all female terminals in the plugs so better contact was had with their matching male pins in the sockets on back of head unit.
It seems that some power and display functions are powered separately to audio function via several power inputs.

Has it been like this since you got the vehicle or has it just happened?

Even though you don't have a Jaguar phone installed, it's as if the sound system has gone into 'mute' for call receiving.

hi graham.
that sounds like a possibility I have pressed all the buttons to see if it changes anything.
but don't know how or if on mute?
tried the phone bits on the stalk and stereo still no joy.

Mute is triggered by grounding. Your 2002MY will have the 14-Way telephone connector under the centre console even without the phone installation:

Pin 6 (Blue) is for mute.

Default Stereo trouble

Ok here we go again. SORRY all.

Right I had a thought disconnected the battery. When I reconnected i set he radio code all came on and sound yay.
But only on for about 30 seconds then back to no sound🤔
This happened twice. With my original radio. So presume the other 2 I have will do the same.
Seems very strange. I was stationery too.
Tried various different people all saying not sure.
Can anybody give me a clue please😞
Like I say no tech wiz but I am trying.

Default Xk8 stereo trouble.

First of all I would like to thank all that tried to solve my problem.
I managed to get stereo working and cut out again a few times no sound
When I turned up the volume a bit.
I took out a speaker that had a different sound slight distortion.
And all seems to be working ok now. Minus a speaker obviously.
Plugged it back in to confirm it was the speaker and went mute again.
So that seemed to be the problem.
Even though I did get auto electrician to check it all and said speakers had feed to them.🤔
I only managed to get terror working by disconnecting the battery.for anybody with the same problem.
THANKS ALL

Tgk9, I appreciate your follow up. It'll help diagnose others in the future. You'd be surprised how many folks start deep technical issues for discussion and never come back to acknowledge what worked. Thank you.

John

+1 on John's post. I'm no expert, but I guess it's possible that the radio has a "self-protect" circuit, so shuts down if there's a problem with one of the speakers and the output transistors start to overheat.
Which speaker ? - most of them are fairly easy to replace.

It was the the rear drivers side speaker in the side panel.
So got to get a replacement for it. But glad I found the problem. Was very frustrating.
