XK8 - Boot Button
My 1998 XK8 Boot Button is obviously in need of replacement as it is broken. This is obvious as the button is pushed in and doesn't work. My immediate question is how do I get to it? I'm guessing from the interior which requires removing the inner cover. And finally, where might the replacement switch be obtained?

John,
I looks like you inadvertently posted in the x400 area of the forum....not the target group of members that likely can help you on your question.
You might find more assistance reposting on the x100 forum instead.

I agree that the post is in the wrong section but.........................
The 'button' is NOT A SWITCH'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The spring lift is to move the boot lid UP after the latch is released.
The 'switch' is located in the latch assy.

Are you typing about the 'button' in the car interior?
VALET MODE will disable all methods of opening the boot lid EXCEPT the KEY and KEYFOB transmitter.
There is a SPRING button I thought you were referencing to lift the lid slightly.
Please be more specific?

Since its a 98, I have one too, I assume you mean the switch next to gas cap release.
1st: ensure you're not in valet mode.
Then, need to get to the switch? Ez:
Remove valance panel under steering wheel.
- remove trim around steering column.
- loosen (no need to remove) 2 bottom screws in valence panel.
- remove 2 screws top of panel.
- gently pull top of panel toward you to free press in plastic holders.
- when panel is pulled back enough to release them, lift upwards. The 2 bottom screws are in an upside-down U shaped slot, so lifting will free the panel.
- Detach the wiring upper right to climate control sensor. detach the connector to the switch you're working on.
- remove panel, work on switch.
Note after reinstall the climate control will beep and display a short error message - that's from the 1st wire disconnection. It goes away in seconds all is ok.
You'll appreciate the loosen bottom screws when reinstalling. Saves time and cuss words for lining up the screw holes..
Once you have access it'll be ez enough to test continuity at back of switch, see if its stuck in place. Frankly since its just closing a low voltage signal circuit- if its broken you could install a temporary momentary on normally open button while you fix or source a replacement. Just be sure its normally open - i almost installed a normally closed switch once. Would've been a disaster since it controls the roof!

And then make sure the doors are unlocked. Dummy me spent along time wondering why the petrol filler cap didn't always open.
