2001 XK8 check engine light on but no engine problems. Bought it 2 weeks ago with 23,800 miles. Now has 24,080 miles and still starts and runs fine. I noticed the light immediately after I washed the car. I am planning to wait until the car cools off in the morning and see if there are problems with a cold start. Any ideas?
You need to go get the codes read, pretty much any auto parts store will read codes for free. It could be anything from a loose gas cap to a fatal drivetrain warning. Common on older cars could also be a vacuum leak, causing a "System Too Lean" and similar on both banks.
Also, you 'oopsed' and posted in the X150 forum when you have an X100. Happens all the time. The 97-2006 models are the X100 while the 2007-2015 models are the X150.
A moderator will certainly move this thread for you, once one sees it.
welcome to the forum - I've moved your post from the XK/XKR (X150) model forum to the appropriate XK8/XKR (X100) model forum for better assistance to your question. As for the Check Engine light - need to go to nearest Advance Auto or Auto Zone and have them pull codes then provide those code numbers here for us to assist in diagnosis.

FYI, the "Check Engine Light" is EMISSIONS related... you would normally not even know anything is "wrong". Either way, your car is probably not in any imminent danger (unless the light is flashing). As Sklimii noted, have the code(s) run with an OBD-II reader and let us know what they are...
You need an OBDII tool to read the codes behind the CEL. You should eventually get a Jaguar/Land Rover scan tool to read all codes from all modules, but you cannot go wrong starting with a cheap wireless ELM327 device (check eBay or Amazon) and a phone app. These cheap ELM327 devices can read standard codes, reset the CEL as well as read live data from common engine parameters, including emissions status by monitor. At the very least, specific codes let you search this forum for specifics.
