1997 Jaguar XK8 with 28,000 miles


A week ago I noticed a very light hesitation when accelerating from a stop. A few minutes later a whining noise started coming from the transmission and, about a mile later, when I reached my destination and put the car in park I noticed a ticking noise from the transmission. About an hour later I drove the car around the block and the noises were still there.
There are no error codes coming up and the car did not go into 'limp home' mode.


I had the car towed home.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

A ticking noise could be as simple as loose converter to flexplate fasteners. A hesitation could indicate low fluid level (and also account for a light whining.)

 

The low mileage of your car is a negative in some respects, particularly as regards fluids. If you haven't done so flush the cooling and brakes, change the water pump and thermostat, maybe install aluminum tower. Replace the secondary tensioners.

As to the transmission, change the filter and fluid. Remove the forward valve body and install the upgraded main pressure valve. Explanation below:
