Talking XK8/XKR Stuff

Okay, maybe this isn't valuable info, but it's interesting for gear heads about the AJ-V8.

I don't know if "doomed" is the right word. ;^)

It looks like classic clickbait.

I gave up watching it as it didn't really offer anything new (to me). Clickbait, for me.

we are (more) Jaguar educated than the average automotive enthusiast. So I’m guessing we are not the target audience of that video.

Nevertheless they nailed it vis a vis the cam chain tensioners.

Not a great start when they say the timing chain tensioner failed and lost oil pressure was the result - rather than pistons and valves unexpectedly bumping into each other…..

There was some good footage in that video that I hadn't seen before so at least worthwhile from that perspective.

As much as Ford has management issues, at least they had the money for Jaguar to develop the x-100 series. For that I’m thankful.

Every project cuts corners where they shouldn’t. Sometimes they get away with it. Other times (Jaguar), they don’t. I have yet to see a perfect engine from any manufacturer. Sometimes it takes decades for the flaw(s) to come out, other times they just slam you right from the beginning.

Our cam chain tensioner fiasco is just another case of hubris and unintended consequences.

Porsche’s intermediate idle bearing flaw is another case of engineers trying to fudge the reliability and end up getting bit in the ***.

It's those little things like the cam chain tensioners that can ruin the reputation of a great engine design. But there are people out there (like me) who snap them up, spend $100 and a couple of hours of work for a great car. Assuming of course that the tensioners haven't let go yet ! I got a great deal on an XJ6 long ago because the tappet guides were backing out of the head - this was common in the 4.2 straight six XK6 engine. I got what was called a "Stake-down" kit that held the tappet guides in place - they were originally pressed in - and kept the car for another 10 great years and many miles.
