Default XKR 2005 Vibration

Hi all,

I have an XKR 4.2-S 2005, which I've just got back on the road after 2 years of it sitting in the garage.

Full service etc.....

New set of BBS wheels and Avon tyres just fitted, computer alignment on the wheels aswell.

At around 65-75 there is a vibration which is really annoying, it comes through the steering wheel and you can also feel it on the floor or it seems that way. It's enough that my hand vibrates on the wheel.

Is there anyone with knowledge of a possible reason or common occurance of this ?

I did read somewhere that there are different types of wheel balancing , could that be it ?, although having just had new wheels fitted today by an expert company I would think they are fine.

Any suggestions would be welcomed, I can post any additional info thats needed.

rgds Shaun

After 2 yers of sitting on the tires, they are probalby causing the problem. They may need to be replaced after that long.

OP did say he'd fitted new tyres. I had my old 928 GTS done at a tyre specialst and then at a 928 specialist who did the job right. Worth getting a second opinion.

Look for a shop that has a Hunter Roadforce balance machine. There is a good chance that will resolve the issue if they have a good tech on it.

Agreed. A Hunter Road Force Balance fixed our new tire issues last year. Regular tire balancing just won't cut it for these large diameter/low profile tires today....

As said in my original post, new BBS Wheels and tyres fitted today, along with alignment.

+1 on the Hunter. It will detect a bad Wheel and/or Tire.

Since the Wheels are New, the problem is probably the Tire(s).

However, even the Hunter may not be able to correct for a Tire that has internal construction defects. Then, the only choice is to use a different Tire.

I'll investigate this and ask tomorrow at the company who fitted the wheels, still have a smile for getting set of new BBS originals fitted, if I can resolve this vibration it would be fantastic.

I tend to agree with Jon that it would point to a balancing issue...

Any other suggestions welcomed, and I'll post with progress.

So after going back to the garage they re-balanced the wheels, made no difference.

I drove across to a friends garage and got it up on a ramp, everything checked and nothing wrong so back to the balancing.

Had the re balanced again but this time somewhere different, simple, the weights had been put on the inside rim only and needed to be near the roadside face.

The front ones have now been done correctly and all is good, rears still need doing to remove the last of the vibration but already a different car.

All I can say is xxxxxxx garages that don;t know what they are doing.

This is not a new story. A surprising number of computer balance machine operators (Hunter & otherwise) are victims of the "peter principle".

It's well you got on top of this straight away. I wonder if a bad job like this could have ruined a new set of tires?
