Default XKR cooling fans both run or none

2001 XKR, I have been having intermittent overheating issues in warm months, (I live in Las Vegas). When it is hot out and I drive on the freeway all is good. When I go off the freeway and drive on surface streets, the temps gauge spikes. I observed that either I have no fan working or both on high speed. I believe the issue is the fan control module. Jag wants $1100.00. That is too much for me. I have a couple questions, 1- Are the relays in the module standard Bosch type relays?, 2- Has anyone tried the Mishimoto fan control kits from FPC Euro, are they any good?
Thanks for any help. Will

Hi will,
Check first fuse F12 (10A) in the Engine Management Fusebox.

If that is fine, then likely the Fan Control Relay Module under the front, adjacent to the LHS foglamp.

I've no idea why Jaguar would want $1100 for the relay module (LJA6702AA). It's £57.64 / $79.77 (+local taxes) on the Heritage site (these are dealership prices):
https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic...ule-relay.html

Perhaps they're quoting for the Fan Control Module for the later cars which, I believe, isn't available other than with the fan assembly complete?

The relay module itself is three relays and a couple of diodes in a box. Not sure if it can be dismantled, though, although you may be able to pick up one from a breaker.

Default thanks

Michael, thanks for the info. I will proceed with the diagnostics. Good deal on the control module!

Michael,
Good call on the fuse. Number F12 was blown (30 amp). I will be observing the temps and fan operation for a while.
Thanks again
Will

For some unknown reason, I quoted above F12 as being 10A:- willtoliv is correct that it is 30A

I have been looking at the schematic of the fan relay control module and it looks to me like when the low speed signal is active both fans run at a reduced speed because the relay hooks them into a series configuration. This provides 6 volt to each fan and makes it run at approximately 1/2 speed.
When the high speed signal is active it hooks both fans to hard power which causes them to run at full speed.
So both fans run all the time when engine heat demands , sometimes on 1/2 speed and sometime at full speed

Actually, the fans run at 4 times the power with the 12 volt parallel connection. The voltage is doubled AND the current is doubled, hence 4 times the power.

I have a question regarding my 2000 XKR and the cooling fans. I started noticing this late in the summer and even into fall. Shortly after engine start. The cooling fans will go to high speed and stay there. The temp gauge shows mid level and nothing seems to be malfunctioning. I thought the fans would run at low speed or not at all only high at high external temps. Can someone give me some pointers for what to look at? The high speed fans create quite a rumble when running at that speed. My AC system was serviced just prior to this happening if that could be the issue.

What was done?

Do the fans respond according to zray's "Radiator Fan Switching Points" chart if the A/C is not turned on, or is it always all or nothing?

Check fuse F12 (30A) in the Engine Management Fusebox.

Check the 4-way pressure switch in the middle of the A/C line that runs along the bottom rear of the radiator.
