Default ZF 6-speed adaptations

Have any of you had a shop other than a dealer do adaptations on your ZF 6-speed?
I have heard that a Snap on tool can do it but not certain.
Thanks

Looks like the car doesn't support the gas level / ignition off procedure like a lot of other cars do.

Depending on how long you want to keep the car and how much you do, a jlr sdd setup may be worth it

What is jlr sdd? Factory software on a solid state drive (ssd)?

Not sure on the acronym but it's the factory diagnostic software. https://www.google.com/search?q=jlr+...bile&ie=UTF-8#

And this link goes through some of the other systemshttp://blog.vxdiagshop.com/2021/02/01/vxdiag-vcx-se-jlr-vs-jlr-vci-sdd-vs-jlr-sdd2/

SDD = Symptom Driven Diagnostics.

Maybe I am getting this wrong but my understanding was that automatic transmissions these days eventually "learn" your driving style over time and will make the adjustments to reflect that. Is this not the case?

Sometimes the ZF Adaptation Drive Cycle needs to be performed by following the procedure in TSB JTB00145 in order to reset the baseline operation to normal on these ZF 6HP26 units, particularly if the shifts begin to get consistently rough. I have had this procedure performed twice on my wife's 2006 XK8 by the Jaguar dealership in Greensboro (once in July 2013 at almost 68,000 miles and again in April 2016 at almost 101,500 miles). I negotiated a cost of $150 each time. Both times it immediately cleared up the rough shifts she had been complaining about. Unfortunately, this dealership tells me they no longer have the capability to perform this procedure so I hope her ZF unit continues to behave normally for the duration of our ownership of this vehicle (currently approaching 124,500 miles). I have done a total of four ATF drain-and-fills between July 2013 and November 2016 and have been running Mercon SP for more than six years now....

Thanks on SSD. JLR probably Jaguar/Land Rover. I bought 2 second gen's thinking the 6 speeds were bulletproof. Close but still see problems in here occasionally. It depends on driving style and service (ATF change at 50) but do they ever completely fail? My offer on an 06 VE was accepted. Sellers were the original buyers and babied the car (full dealer service). Before I went to pick up the car, the trans "completely failed" (per their mechanic) and couldn't be fixed. Valve body replace wouldn't do it. Had to be rebuilt (8k). I think they got ripped off.

Yes indeed, the ZF 6HP26 can fail. To give yourself a better chance of extending its lifespan, regular ATF drain-and-fills are essential....

Agree. Maybe "spirited driving" and "energetic J-gate use" are factors. Of course, no one in here would do that sort of thing.....

And they very well might be?
You need to read this thread before writing off the ZF 6-speed.

I have a Foxwell NT530 and it appears to support the function to clear the adaptations. *NOTE* I have never actually used this function, I just see it in the menu.

In general I highly recommend the Foxwell tool, in particular because it can hold multiple programs at the same time so you can set it up to work for multiple makes and models. I originally got it for the Aston Martin support but have since added JLR, Ford and Porsche to it and find it works quite well on all fronts.
