Default XK8

Hi.
I have been told I need new pads and discs for my 1997 xk8 and have been quoted a price for nearly £500.00 fitted. Is this reasonable?
Any help will be appreciated.

Kind Regards
Daryl

It is very easy to do yourself. You will need tools.

Jaguar pads and rotors £380 US pricing so with labor not a bad deal.

That sounds rather expensive, especially since you can purchase drilled and slotted rotors, for all 4 wheels with ceramic brake pads for around $250 on Ebay. The rear brakes on any car don't need replacing for well over 100,000 miles, unless you are delivering the mail, because 3/4 of the braking is handled by the front wheels.

At 95,000 miles I just replaced the front brakes, with ceramic pads on my XK8 for $40,(they needed it), and an hour, taking my time. The rotors didn't need to be replaced, because they were still thicker than specs, and were not warped.

I can't imagine a shop charging more than a couple of hours replacement time to replace the front pads and rotors, plus parts. 500 pounds sterling sounds a bit pricey to me.....Let's see how others weigh in on this.....Mike

I'm kind of new to XK8's (a couple weeks) but I have found they 1) Chew through front rotors with little wear to the pads 2) a brake job/replacing rotors is pretty easy and just requires a few wrenches/sockets and the proper Allen key for the caliper... and likely a C-clamp to compress the caliper enough to get the pads over the ridge in the rotor.

Not as easy as a Brembo car, but much easier than many cars I've owned.

Parts are pretty Cheap, too. Drilled/Sloted rotors are $100 USD each, Pads were $20 USD.

Welcome to the forum Daryl,

Depends exactly what the quote is for. Discs and pads only or including replacing pad pins and retaining springs? Plus VAT at 20% or inclusive?

Jaguar front pads are around £50 a set but aftermarket ones can be found at half that price. Similarly Jaguar front discs are over £100 a pair but aftermarket ones can be found for under £30.

Replaced my worn brakes with a set (front & Rear) from US DIRECT Ceramic pads and drilled & slotted rotors from vendor (US Direct) on E Bay. The are the Zinc coated (Black) and look great and brake smoothly. Cost was less then $300 incl S&H (free?)

If you are having a JAg Dealer perform the service they may also be including the flexible brake lines, the JTIS requires these to be changed on brake service, though most of us that have done brake jobs don't replace them, could be part of the added cost, you may want to inquire about this.

To brake hoses anyone owning a car more than about 5 years old should do some reading on the expected life of a hose as it is the inside you have to worry about not what they look like on the outside. On motorcycles I have tried to use replace over 5 years old for the obvious reason of two wheels don't have lots of extra safety and brake fade due to aging hose is not something I like. Swap to steel braided lines when available since they don't allow for expansion. I have never had it happen to me but can imagine that sudden front brake loss while driving a car aggressively wouldn't be fun or safe.
Here is another post describing brake feel change with SS braided lines. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...uestion-84319/
Of course you will feel some change with standard hose if yours are old, and fluid has been in there for years as fluid also breaks down. Check around if you are working on this as some aftermarkets will be braided hoses for only a few dollars extra. The labor is minimal if you are going to do the fluid flush.
