Default Scratch Removal on Metal Sill Plate - Jaguar XKR

The chrome metal sill plate with the Jaguar XKR name has minor scratches on the plate. What do you suggest to remove these scratches? I have tried removing the scratches by hand using a metal polish; but did not remove any of the scratches. I have seen a polishing wheel and red abrasive stick used for scratch removal, has anyone tried this with success?

I've got the same issue on mine, and the chrome surrounds of the windows. I bought some "Never Dull", and it didn't help much, or rather at all.

I ordered a cotton buffing wheel and several different types of polishing compound that I will use to remove the scratches. If I am successful I will report back with pictures. The polishing compound comes in various degrees of abrasives. I will use the coarsest first followed by the finer grade at last. Then buff and clean the area. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I think that since they are chromed metal surfaces, then it will be impossible for a buffing system to remove scratches. I think they would need to be professionally cleaned/pollished/rechromed. (or replaced)

Once chrome has any type of scratches it's almost impossible to remove, if they are stainless or polished aluminum your chances of polishing them are much better as long as they are not clear coated.

Or anodized. I had posted a thread about a year ago on polishing the anodized aluminum trim around my wifes S Type. I had tried everything from never-dull to easy off oven cleaner to aircraft finish remover and more! Take a read https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=29860

I attended a Jaguar Concours this weekend in St. Louis, MO and a fellow participant said he ended up just having the dealer replace the sill for $200. Anybody know how to remove the sill plate for replacment?

I tried removing the scratches on the chrome sill plate and you were right, I was unable to remove the scratches. I am going to try one more time, if still unsuccessful I am going to replace the plates.
Does anyone know how to remove and install new sill plates, are they just glued down?

According to my service advisor, the sill plates are glued on with 3M tape.

I heard from a customer service rep that when the Jaguar XKR chrome plate is removed it will expose several screws that when removed will allow the sill plate to be removed. Maybe your Jag technician was talking about the name plate being attached with 3M tape?

If both plates are removed do you think a professional polisher/buffer can remove the scratches. I did get a price for a new sill plate of $123 each, ouch!

If I can remove the name plate on the sill, I can remove the metal sill so that I can have the plate buffed and polished for next year show season. Has anyone had success removing this name plate? If it is held in place with 3M tape I would think it should pop off without bending the metal. Any suggestions?

Yes, easy if you know how.......

It's a permanent fixing with 3M, but a hair dryer, a flat scraper and lots of patience will get them off, heat and slide the FLAT tool (e.g. stiff steel rule, paint scraper) from one end to the other. 3/4 torx head bolts hold the ali plate on underneath. Go easy and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the tip.

If anything I have learned about owning a Jaguar is patience. I have to walk away from what I am doing, before I get too frustrated. If I take a short break and go back to what I was doing helps immensely. You can't have too much patience when working on Jaguars.

'll let you know how I do.

Are the sills interchangeable? the passenger one is still very nice while the driver's side has all the scratches...

Thanks

I agree that they appear to be clear anodized, so polishing is not a solution.

To remove the sills, start at one end and heat the name plate then very gently pry it up. I usually wedge #22 copper wire under it and continue heating and pulling. If you keep the adhesive clean, you can reheat it and stick it back on without adding additional tape or adhesive.

The Treadplates (item 1) are different for LH and RH but the Inserts (item 2) are interchangeable.

It is possible to DIY anodize.
I used to turn up my own amplifier/radio knobs as an impecunious student and anodize them with a battery charger and sulphuric acid.
Here's a link
Home Aluminum Anodizing
You can strip the old anodizing with caustic soda solution.
You can even colour your anodising - use cotton dye, dip, then boil to seal the colour in.
