Number cast into an E-Type's alloy oil filter housing
Apparently there is a number that is cast into the oil filter housing on an E-Type Jag.
Does anyone know the exact location of this number?
I have performed every possible contortionist act trying to find it with no success!!
Help!!

Hi Crazycatman,
I believe the number you are referring to is the engine serial number. Directly above the oil filter there is a boss on the engine block with a machined flat surface. The number is stamped onto this flat surface. If it is very dirty or oily you will have to wipe it clean before you will be able to see and read the numbers. The easiest way to see it is to shine a light on it from above and between the carbs. Good luck.
Bill.

Hi Bill
Thanks for responding
I am fully aware of the engine number and it’s location but according to a parts vendor there is also a number cast into the oil filter housing itself
That is the number that I’m struggling to find!!

Crazycatman,
Sorry, I misunderstood. I don't remember ever seeing a number on the oil filter housing, but then again I have never looked for it.
When you say oil filter housing, do you mean the oil filter canister or the console that the canister attaches to? I presume that the oil filter console would be stamped on the flat facing surface.
I have a question though; what does this number mean anyway?

Hey Bill,
Thanks again for your response.
I am doing a conversion to a spin on oil filter and I was told by the vendor that they require the number to be able to supply the correct part
When I gave him my engine number (to ascertain whether my car is an early or later series 2) E-Type he seemed to stick to the need for the number stamped on the filter housing itself.
The only stampings that I can find are "Made in England" on the one side an "Timelacet" on the opposite side. There are NO numbers!!
Thanks again for your response.

Hmm, interesting.
I have a series 1.5 with a spin on conversion. I do not recall being asked for a particular number on the filter housing. Maybe on series1 engines it doesn't make a difference.
Now I'm curious. Let me know if you find it.

The vender should be able to tell by a picture of it or the gasket. I would get it from Cool Cat Corp... i.e. MxFrank on this board.

Hi Guys,
Thank you all for weighing in I really appreciate the input
I think I have solved the problem, upon downloading the installation instructions for the spin on filter it states that it fits engine number 7R35583 onwards, so that covers my engine!!
BTW Alan on the photo that you attached where you see Type FA2119 mine says "Made in England", so clearly mine is a later model
Cheers

There were three filter heads used in early E-Type production. They roughly break down into S1 3.8, S1 4.2, and S2 4.2. However, there were overlaps, so the S1 4.2 filter head is found on S2's until 1970. To make it even more complicated, all of them interchange, and were often replaced with different units. Thanks for the input mxfrank, as you say the factory really made some things really complicated and confusing.
I'm hoping that the spin on filter that I have bought will work.
I will know when I do my next oil change in a couple of weeks time!
