Not intending to put-down 4-bangers, still, my feeling is that they do not belong in a Jag. Jags supposed to be smooth above all and powerful. Yes, you can get lots of boosted power out of a 4-cyl but, I'm yet to experience one with the smoothness that live up to high line auto standards. The 2.0 in my dealer's loaner had adequate power but, had turbo-lag and the typical 4-cyl shakes and canny noises on start-up and under some idle conditions. Yet, the gas mileage, as I checked against the V6 and the V8, was not measurably higher than the much smoother V6.

I purchased both our new XJL and XF purposely in 2012 when I heard that the V8s would be replaced with the V6. I "could" live with the V6 in my Jags if I did not have any other choice but, would simply not purchase a Jag with the 4-banger.

Have to agree with Albert. The 4 has enough power for most (my guess) but it is NOT a Jaguar as we know them.

I have had 3 XJS’s with the V 12’s and don’t ever welcome that again BUT my V6 F type is smooth and still a Jag in my mind

For my potential future F-type Coupe purchase I basically look to the V6S for a good all arounder.

I have yet to experience a smooth 4 cyl. engine from anyone, including Toyota, Nissan...although in my daughter's Hyundai Sonata, it's acceptable. They produce a vibration/sound reminiscent of of buzzzzzzing bees. The gas savings are simply not worth it.

My wife's 2012 Sonata has a very buzzy 2.4L and it is awful.

However if Jaguar makes a 4cylinder F-Type and reduce the weight AND offer it with a manual transmission, it could be a homerun for them.

The F-Type has two problems for me. It's too darn expensive. And I don't think the small 2-seat roadster format is really evocative of a villainous high performance car, which is what the F-Type is. A small 2-seat roadster is much more suited for a less-serious fun tossable car, and I have high hopes for a 4 cylinder F-Type.

The problem is that it will still be heavy with the 4-cyl. How much of the V8's 4000 lbs do you suppose the 4 banger shaves off? 200, at best? Still too heavy, now for a 4 cyl engine. I like to see a 4 banger down to about 3000 lbs, or preferably less. Also, I don't think that pictures do the F-type any favors when it comes to its perceived size. Measuring it acutally, places it at about the same length as the Carrera and Corvette but, it is 2+ inch wider than each, I think. That width does show up in real life, giving it "presence" on the road.

Now, the interior is kind of small and I did feel somewhat closed-in by it. Still, I'm holding out for an actual experience with the Coupe as I've never been much for verts.

Haha, I have no idea. They'd have to put it on a serious diet. I'd want it to be closer to 3200 lbs!

Perhaps even replace some of the sophisticated computer controlled suspension parts and put in less heavy duty components (it probably won't need a differential capable of handling 500-torques!) smaller brakes, wheels, etc. If the aluminum chassis is really that light, I'm sure they could find a way to make it a lightweight car!

But I do think all of this would push it way downmarket and maybe wouldn't make financial sense. Probably better off producing an all-new model to compete with the Boxster/Cayman and upcoming Alfa 4C.

Doesn't seem to make sense for marketing. One of the features of the pre-4 and 6 banger XF's was exclusivity of an all V8 car. They must project they will sell more at a lower price point. Is their a tuner market for 4's?

Will the MSRP for the 4 be that significantly lower than the standard V6? It reminds me of Infiniti's G25 which was marketed for less than 2 years to keep the G37 price down by using a smaller engine and removing many options. It didn't work as most customers wanted everything that was taken away with the G25.

Default Strippers rarely sell

However dealers use them to get people into the dealerships and then upsell them. The screwy thing about this is the 4 wheel drive, the V8 needs it, the 4 not so much.

Anyway remember the Tesla S had an entry model, I don't think they sold a single one.

If the F-Type is a true sports car, buyers looking for a true sports car should have no problem getting rid of all the fluff. If it comes with all the stuff that comes in a Dodge Viper of Corvette Stingray, that should be plenty!
