I have a 2016 F-Type purchased last October. The car has run great but just developed a sporadic coolant leak which may be linked to AC use. I'm gonna have my guy look at it next week but does this sound like a common problem?

 

Nothing to do with the climate control and everything to do with the plastic coolant pipes (2 at the front of the engine, one at the rear). There are now metal pipes to replace all three. You might have a water pump leak but that is less likely.

There are various sources for the correct metal replacement pipes, one of them being Euro Amp…look on line for this. Jaguar Land Rover also now have metal pipes for the two front replacements.

do not neglect this. Overheating is serious. Keep the coolant level up until you gett this fixed.

 

It’s strange that JLR didn’t make metal options available for all 3. Kinda weird.

Have your 'guy' check the water pump. They were known to leak.

Anyone with a 2017 and earlier F-Type needs to watch this closely. Even the first gen 'fix' isn't always good. I bought the parts and was going to try this myself, then I saw some videos on how involved this is and how hard is to get to the Y pipe. I think I'll bite the bullet and have a pro take care of it.

Also, while the supercharger is off to access the coolant plumbing underneath, be sure to check (or have your shop check) to see if the supercharger coupler is worn. A majority of the labor to replace the coupler is already required for the coolant fixes so it's good to see if the coupler needs any attention while you're there.

 

As owner of a 2016 that just had the trio of pipes replaced because one was leaking, I endorse having them checked.

Two preliminary things that are easy enough to check without needing "your guy" are:

- Check the coolant level (engine cold) and see if it's low.
- You mention a leak, so I assume this is in the form of observed drips on the floor. If so, see where they are. Since you mentioned a link to AC use, it's possible you're seeing water coming off the evaporator. This is normal, and the drips will be further under that unit (rear of engine compartment, to passenger side).

The pipes leak either into the engine V or on the rear, just ahead of the firewall. I'm not sure where the drips would appear if enough were to leak. In my case, it was not making it to the ground, but was visible as wet orange residue under the crossover manifold. That pipe is the one still made in plastic but I don't think requires supercharger removal. I opted to have all three done, plus the water pump.

 

On my 16R, I recently purchase the replacement kit from Euro Amp which included all pipes in aluminum as well as the water pump. Cost was under $300. It was installed by an amazing independent shop in Hollis, New Hampshire. I was charged $2134 which included all OEM gaskets and SC oil. Total cost approximately $2500. The piece of mind is priceless. Money well spent!!!!
