I would never drill holes or use sticky anything on dash, that hurts my heart. I'm also not into mounting things on vents that could break the vents or be wobbly. So I solved the problem another way. This is all kind of temporary until I'm sure it's working, but so far with a week of driving around it's going pretty well. Still BETA status though, early prototype.
For now I am just using some velcro wire straps, but since that's working I'm making a permanent one out of nylon webbing and heavier velcro.
Then I designed and printed this bracket to sit on the console spar. The ball joint on it fits into this phone mount's ball socket.
Still looks like a beta with this rough print and the temporary velcro. But it doesn't leave any marks on the leather at all, can be removed easily with one velcro strap, and faces me well enough in the driver seat to unlock my phone with my face.
This phone mount is pretty great and I think fits the Jag very well, too, with its automatic arms that grip the phone and the elegant little motorized release when you touch the silver side buttons. I think with a nice plastic part and the right velcro strap, it could be pretty stylish.
Working on the velcro strap now, will update when I have something nice!
Designed for LHD, but if anyone's interested I could flip the design for RHD cars easily enough.
This is what I have done for a phone holder
Carbon fiber effect abs about 2mm thick, cold bent over a bit of MDF.
What about a full clamp mount instead of velcro? thinking more a snap lock solution or maybe tension bolt. If you want to share the original cad file I can update and send back to you what I am thinking? @Bobby V
I got this magnetic charging mount from Peak Design. I then trimmed down the base flange a bit to fit inside the blank "Console Mat" (part number T2R8668). I then used gloss black epoxy resin to fix the charging mount into the console mat. It then just popped back into the dash. Car can be returned to stock by simply getting a new Console Mat (under $30) and replacing it. No permanent modifications to the car.
Those with sharp eyes will notice there's no cord running from the lighter socket to the charger. I have a new 1ft right-angle USB-C cord and higher powered lighter insert on the way from Amazon. The cable sits nicely along the right side of the console against the base of the passenger grab bar, so I haven't bothered to affix the cable in any way.
When on the charger, the phone does not interfere with the shifter (I use the paddles when driving, anyway) and I have an Apple CarPlay adapter, so I don't actively use the phone while driving. Which begs the question, "why not just get a short cable and put the phone in the center console bin"? Two reasons: 1. my wife's iPhone Pro Max is too large for the bin with a cable attached; 2. It's a pain to open the bin, connect the cable, and then remember to grab the phone when leaving the car. So much easier to just pop it on the magnetic charger, then grab and go.
