I’m in the process of returning that Topdon scan tool I linked above. Despite confirming ahead of purchase it would do the GPF functions it wouldn’t. It will eventually but the time frame involved is a bit too open ended for me so I’m returning it.

After the auto scan of the VIN the special functions were there to select but they don’t have the software quite right yet.

Looks like the play is to get an Autel or Ototfix device (which is basically rebranded Autel).

It’s a shame because that Topdon was super nice.

Sucks, but at least you get a refund.

I got my car back and plan on driving as much as I can with the fuse pulled. I really want to see what my device actually does when I try to execute the regeneration process. I'll give it another 200-400 miles and try it again.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see what happens there for sure…With the fuse out will the scan tool give some sorta error when trying to run either the static or dynamic regeneration procedure, despite having enough soot buildup to justify running one?

Hopefully those statistics around the number of regenerations ran etc are accurately being gathered by the tool. I wish it could tell you what the soot buildup was without having to run a regeneration.

For interest, I have information that the following cheaper entry level scanner with free updates from Foxwell has the ability perform the GPF regeneration function:

https://www.foxwelldiag.com/products...48390371770650

That’s what their support group is definitively telling me anyway, but I’ve been down this road recently with Topdon, only to find out their product would not do it in the end.

I’m still trying to get Topdon to honour the return they told me they would do if their product ended up not being able to do GPF. Once I get that returned the plan is to buy this Foxwell. Cheaper and free updates, much better for my level of DIY ;-) For those interested I will post up my success or fail with that.

Foxwell apparently will return their products no issues within 2 weeks of purchase, since I have confirmed with them that it will work. At this point I’ll probably just wait until spring to purchase the Foxwell because my car will be going to bed for 6 months in a few weeks.

I ALSO LEARNED:

The Icarsoft LR v3 scanner that a lot of us already have…I contacted them and they are telling me that there are plans to add GPF capabilities to this device, but there is no clear timeframe available for when that will happen. They told me that it is a reasonably complex function.

Cheers

Kind of an interesting thread I came across on a Porsche forum concerning GPF, modern Porsches with them having GPF failures left right and centre…For me the moral of the story one could take from the info in that thread is to at least have the GPF in your modern F-type be a consideration, particularly if you have a low miles short trip typical use case like I do…Many suggestions in there that such use cases could be feeding into the problems…

Cheers

@DMeister I can't thank you enough for your posts in this thread. I too did the claws out mod (and posted some schematics and pix), but I think I am going to pull the trigger on the ASR module.

Hey no problem man. I assume you saw the guide for installing the ASR. The ASR will give peace of mind, and it’s much more polished than the Claws out trick. It’s a nice product for sure.
