MK1 Synchronizer Mystery
Hello, I have a GB non-syncro from a 1956 Mk1 and it will only shift into 1st and reverse even with the cover off you cannot get the syncronisers to slide over the gear teeth. It will only shift into reverse and first, no second, third or fourth. The gears and all parts look to be in great condition. I removed the 3-4 shift sleeve, and it was really stuck on the hub, so I sanded lightly with emery paper now shifts when I hold the sleeve and hub in my hands but assemble trans and still can’t get shifted into 2-3 or 4th gears.
I have been posting back and forth with Glyn M Ruck and Peter3442, and both guys have been very helpful. Peter sent me a link to an article that describes the exact problem I am experiencing. http://www.jag-lovers.org/xk-lovers/...ox_reilly.html .
The transmission came along with many boxes of parts and the cover was off and the inside of the trans was very clean, someone had been trying to get it working, and when I initially bolted on the cover, I found out what they were trying to solve. No 2,3 or 4th.
The link describes the exact problem I finally found. The article describes that if the 3rd and high syncro and ***** are not assembled in one specific sequence that you won’t be able to shift. Bang Pow the light bulb in my head lit up. The article by Rob Reilly on Jag-Lovers toward the end of the article he starts a paragraph "The Mossbox went together, but not without incident" then he describes a shortfall in the Jaguar Manual that leaves out how to do this assembly step. But the article does not give the information on how to solve this mystery.
If anyone has ever heard of the solution it would get me out of a big bind figuratively and literally. Thanks again Steve In Iowa USA
P.S. if you want to see a neat car museum that I’ve been working at for a couple years go to Okoboji classic cars .com and check out photos and videos.

The two pdfs attached are scanned from my Mk2 manual. I don't know if they help as it's not something that I've ever done. Sorry for the quality of the images. I photocopied them a few decades ago from books in a local public library. I put the paper in transparent plastic file envelopes and over the years the paper and plastic have stuck together which males scanning difficult.
Peter, This information looks great, it will take me a few days to get it executed, and I will be sure to let you know how it turns out. I feel confident that it should work.
Thank you and Glyn for all the guidance.

It's worth obtaining a copy of the Mk2 service manual (and the S type and 420). Hardcopies are available as re-prints:

I think Jose's website has pdf versions.
They are fairly complete and good to follow.

I found out with the manual pages Peter posted that I luckily had been assembling the synchronizer correctly. But still I could not shift. So after confirming assembly the only thing I could see to do that would allow shift was to shorten the plunger inside the hub, I decided to do this because the manual sheets recommended that is shifting is difficult or too tight to install a shorter plunger, so no shift was possible at all, and I followed the manual recommendation and removed .004 from the flat side of the plunger, and this allowed me to shift into 3rd and 4th. What a huge relief, now I still need to gain a shift into 2nd.
Glyn, That would be great. I work at a museum and we all use the head mechanics email it is jon@okobojicc.com
Thank You, Steve

Sorry ~ you will have to use the Moss section of S Type Manual. Page F4 onward. Same as Mk2.
