Power steering system Jaguar Mk2 / S-Type (Burman)
Good morningI am looking for a complete Burman power steering assembly for a Jaguar Mk2 or Jaguar S-Type in LHD version.
As far as I understand, the main difference between the Mk2 and the S-Type Burman units is the steering ratio (number of turns lock-to-lock).
Please let me know if you have a complete unit available (steering box, valve, pump, brackets, etc.).
My best regards
G้rard
I think the differences were as much a question of year of introduction as model. Certainly, the later versions are preferable, not only for the fewer turns, but also because the valve opening is controlled by a torsion bar. In the UK, the parts turn up on eBay and the Jaguar breakers. Presumably, equivalent sources exist in France. The steering box will most likely require rebuilding, which is doable. If the worm or nut are worn, they have to be replaced as you can't adjust the play. It may be easier, though not cheaper, to search out a box from a rebuild specialist.
Are you wanting to just do a swap-out, or is the car all in bits ? Reason to ask is that later Mark 2s and S-Types were fitted with the Marles Varamatic steering box, which is really a better box, but you have to modify the front subframe to make it fit. As far as I know, the steering boxes fit RHD and LHD, its just a matter of mounting the steering arm differently, However, if the steering arms are different, you'd have to find one of these.
If you want to replace a manual box with a power box, you could consider one of the electric conversions that have become available in recent years. Needless to say, you'd have to replace the dynamo with an alternator to get the amps to power the electric motor. HOwever, these conversions are not cheap !

I just had a look at my Varamatic. The input shaft is at an angle to help the column pass the engine. I don't think it's possible to make a RHD work LHD or the other way.
I'm building a 1962 3.8 Mk2 Race Car. I have removed a complete BURMAN power steering system replacing with a manual steering system and EZ power steering system.
I have pics but don't seem able to upload I'm located in East Tennessee, where are you?

Good evening 1750 Alfa
Very first question, is it an LHD Burman (type 1 or type 2) ?
I am based in Paris. Let me know how to get inputs about these parts.
My best regards

Hi Gerard
Sorry I'm new to this online stuff and didn't spot Paris. The last car I sold, a round tube, Ginetta G4 I sold to a French guy who was returning to Paris
The car I took this LHD Burman Power steering system from was 1961 3.8 manual with O/D, initially registered in New York.
I'm fairly certain it has never been off the car so safe to say, Mk1.
There is a picture now at my first post, it is very complete.,

I’ve got the EZ electric PAS on my Daimler, which I’m very happy with. It did require the removal of a small piece of body work, to mount the electric motor, which can be a deal breaker for some (but not me). And it’s made the car much easier to live with.
