I am having an issue with the steering column on a 1967 MK2,340 in which you can pull the steering column towards you and push it forward.The column moves about 3/4 of an inch, it telescopes internally at the round joint on the top of the lower column.The one with the rubber boot attached.All bolts are tight and I can't find any technical info on this style of column for my car.All illustrations show a rubber coupling where it connects to the upper column.Do I have the correct lower column and if so should this round joint telescope?Thank you.

 

You need these.
The steering column will have to be removed to gain access.
The diagram for this was available here, but the link no longer works.

Once the column is removed the plastic thrust bearing is located near the bottom and is held in place with this metal crimped on strap.
I took a punch and carefully tapped it down towards the bottom until the thrust bearing was accessible.

The other bushings usually need replacing as well, as the original felt ones don't last.

Unless it is a photo problem you have another issue in that the exhaust manifolds are incorrect. Those seem to be the early straight down from an very early MK2 or E-Type. Yours should both angle back. Not sure how many degrees (never measured) but significant to clear the steering.

 

The lower steering column upper joint is a plunging CV joint as found on later cars with replaceable nylon rollers. Superseded the rubber coupling.













Also ~ Is your adjustable steering wheel locking bezel/collar tightened correctly.

 

What does it matter what's in there, as long as the manifolds clear the steering linkage, and it looks like there is plenty of clearance ?

I suppose so, my manifolds on my 340 are the correct ones, they have quite the curve on them, especially the front one, but honestly, the clearance doesn't look much different then the OP's.
I'll try and take picture when time permits at the same angle just for comparisons sake.

 

Thank you for the great replies.Now I know that I have the correct steering columns and the excess forward/rearward travel is caused by the missing thrust washers in the upper column.
You guys are the best and I hope that I can reciprocate in the future.

 

Jeff as I said it could just be the picture--but I have seen the incorrect ones on cars. The 3.4L saloons (aka MK1) had straight manifolds.
