Ben AJV8 drift project
Hi everybody my name is Ben. I don't actually own a jaguar but here's my story. My car is an imported Nissan s15 and is an ex British Drift Chamionship competition drift car fully FIA comp spec. I will post some pictures if I can figure out how. After running 2.0 litre SR engines and 2.5 RB skyline engines I am now doing an engine swap and putting the 4.2 supercharged AJv8. Reason for me joining the forum is to ask some questions about the engines to help along the way as I've come from a jap background and could do with some info from the jaguar wizards. Hope to hear from some of you soon. Thanks. Ben

i like the idea . but i worry that this ajv8 won't have enough poke for you . avos has managed 700+ hp with a 4.7 stroker and a big KB twin screw SC hate to say the cost of that alone . and it seems his kit is no longer available . and for the cost of making your aj reach 500 odd HP , you would have easily achieved 1000+HP on an RB30det . i hate to be the negative one , and any thing is possible i guess . but before you mount it check out the costs to bring this aj up to the plate . in my opinion the toyota 1uz or 2jz or the vg45 nissan v8 would be money far better spent . strait away the three japas i mention will take you over 8000rpm with easy over 1200HP single or twin turbo or super charged . food for thought . if money is not an option and it has to be a jag donk
get the 5.0 to start with , I'm just guessing so correct me if I'm wrong but it looks to be a 4.2 with the cover on around the wrong way in your pic.

Yes it's the 4.2 the cover is just placed on around the chains on the crane for now haha. Money is a big issue for me as a drifter I have to spend a lot of money on the fabrication of the car and all sorts of things aswell so I'll be sticking with the 4.2 charged for now. Ive always wanted a V8 in my life so that's the reason.
This one also has a modified m112 charger so should put out a bit more with a custom standalone ecu and map. We've done some research and other similar builds have easily reached 500hp which will be easily enough for me at this stage coming from a 280bhp RB25

Wow that's a low power rb you have there , my naybor has a street leagle 700hp rb26 GTR that was tuned for 800 then turned down , and like every one who does that sort of thing he now wants 1000! I can't think of a single rb in this town less than 350hp and belive me they are every were , we have a ultered rail here in Nelson with 850hp sr20 , makes me wonder why the step away from the tryed and proven jap engine ,
The rason I thort 500 would not be enough is that most if not all drift cars in this country are around 900ish HP bar the classic ae86's at around 400hp , I can't belive your car is competitive, with so few ponies . What trans and ecu are you going with ? I sure hope you end up with what you wanted .

Well I can see from the picture it's a non-VVT 4.2, out of an STR or XJR, it's got a smaller supercharger pulley and a bigger crank pulley...
Your biggest challenge is going to be intercooler temps. I'd seriously consider some water/meth injection to keep keep the charge cool.
If you're trying to keep things on a budget, try to find some exhaust manifolds from a 4.0L XJR or XKR (1997 to 2002) or a 4.2L XKR up to 2006, assuming of course that they will fit ok in an S15 (I can't imagine there is too much room in an S15 engine bay). Those manifolds flow a bit better than the ones in the STR.
Much easier to get power out of it with an aftermarket ECU, just bear in mind the MAP sensor in the factory location does not measure the manifold boost, so you would need MAFs or to add a MAP on the charge side. The later 4.2 engines from the XF SV8 and the X150 XKR had a combined MAP & Temp sensor in the manifold between the chargecooler and the head, the early ones like the STR & XJR have only a temperature sensor.
What gearbox are you planning on using?

The RB25 engine from the gtst skyline are only 280hp as standard and mine was a stock engine with only uprated coilpacks. Most competitive drift cars these days are running around the 500-700 bhp mark but there's even a few competitive cars in the BDC who are running around 300bhp. It's the instant power response and the torque I'm after as opposed to big horsepower.
Yes I have the charge cool rad pack and Ali rad aswell I'm looking into doing some sort of water injection system to help worth the cooling. As far as exhaust goes I have my completely straight pipe system from the car before and am looking to have a custom section made possibly including manifolds but I haven't got to that stage yet haha. One pay check at a time 😂

Hi Ben,
Your project sounds pretty cool.
I have been working on my own set up. I have a 3.2 that I have ready to wire up to a megasquirt ecu. My plan is to go with a 4.2 supercharged engine when I have a little spare money. I have been working on my own clutch set up which would use a v8 flex plate combined with 2.7 v6 clutch but just needing a little more work to complete. This set up would be like a typical standard car clutch but maybe not for big bhp goals. I have already had a bench test for operation and it works super nice. I have now managed to get hold of a like new flywheel and double plate clutch for the jag v8.. All good practice I guess!
Power goals of the 4.2 supercharged engine being in a manual set up, tubular exhaust manifolds, pulley mods and a stand alone ecu would give alot! Another interesting thought I have had is turbocharging and the big increase of power that would bring to the v8!
It would be interesting to get chatting to someone who is interested in modifications for the jag v8. I have been into tuning and playing about with cars for years but the thought of going a different route altogether for a power transplant instead of the 2jz's, rb's or american v8's seems right to me.
Kind regards,
Dave.
This is a picture of my set up. Sorry its not the best of pictures..
