Default Brand New Jaguar owner

Hi, Just thought I would introduce myself.
My Name is Jason, I am picking up my very first Jaguar tomorrow namely a 3.0 V6 S Portfolio XF on a 60 plate in Black with Ivory interior.
As you can guess, I am extremely excited and can not wait.
I will be posting professional pictures on here and no doubt will be troubling you all with lots of questions down the line.
I have been driving Volvo S80's and S60's up till now and although I have no issue with them, they are not that inspiring or head turning like the XF I am collecting.

Look forward to getting to know you all better.

Regards,

Jason

Welcome aboard, Jason

Cheers
DD

PS- a few years ago, while out of town, I rented an S60 for a week. In a nutshell, I found it to be a "entirely satisfactory" automobile.

That can be interpreted as both a compliment and a condemnation, I reckon

Thanks for the warming welcomes guys.
Looking forward to being part of the site.
I always found the Volvo forum very useful and I suspect the Jaguar bunch are a closer knit community.
I'll be picking up the car later today or tomorrow.

One quick question, I suspect I need to post this elsewhere but whilst I am typing.
The car is due to come out of warranty on Dec 17th, is there anything particular I should look for before the warranty runs out.
Or by all means link me to any useful running forums I should check.

Thanks alot

It's always a conundrum whether to go for an extended warranty at significant cost or presume anything which is going to go wrong (other than through wear and tear) will have failed already.

I would enquire if there are any TSB's (Technical Service Bulletins) or updates for your model and, if so, have these been applied.

With any new (to me) vehicle, I always connect my scantool to check for stored or pending DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes). This tells me more than any dealer or owner ever will! A Jaguar Dealer will do this for you if you don't have an appropriate scantool but will charge.

Thanks Graham,

So If I just ask them to do a scan for any DTC's they will be fine with that. I'm not worried about paying for that kind of service as it could be beneficial for me in the long run.
The garage I am buying from are a Jaguar specialist so I am hoping they would have done that anyway, I will ask the question later.

Regards,

Jason

Jason,

You would hope to see only one code - P1111. This indicates all OnBoard test have been completed since the last memory clear.

Code P1000 indicates OnBoard tests not complete meaning codes have recently been cleared. If this is the only code, it would prompt the question why have the codes been cleared.

Wow, welcome and not bad starting with your first Jag only 3 years old ! My first was a very tired XJ-S which had not been well looked after. AT least I knew what to look for in the next one !
Anyway, I've owned Volvos too and generally found them solid and reliable but not exactly 'exciting'. A Jaguar - any Jaguar - tends to get my blood pumping. Make of that what you will.
As regards the car coming out of warranty - I wouldn't be over-concerned about it. The two in my stable are 16 and 20 years young and give less trouble than many newer cars. Jaguars have a habit of lasting well provided they are maintained by someone who knows them well.
Your Car will be due its first MOT test on its third birthday and I would strongly suggest having that and a full service done well before the warranty expires so that anything found can be sorted out before it expires.
Other than that, just enjoy it !

Thanks for the kind words. I do feel very lucky and very excited to own it.
I picked it up last night and had a play, WOW, the power is incredible but also so smooth when you don't fire it up. The quietness is also very enjoyable considering its a Diesel.
I'm planning to take my camera out today and fire some top notch pictures, I will post a link to them on here once I do (I run a photography business so I'm assuming they will come out pretty good haha)

The car was serviced by the Jaguar independent garage that I bought it from although this always concerns me a little in case anything was 'overlooked' to keep the cost of the service down, they also MOT'd it (a little early) but I'm guessing you can't 'overlook' things on MOT's.
I am considering having it serviced again at the main dealer before the warranty runs out, they are doing a free health check on Friday but I suspect that won't be very indepth.

Advice welcomed on the service points raised above.
It is 67,000 miles on the clock born 17/12/10 and has a history of 15386 Jaguar Watford 10/08/11 (A Service), 32218 Jaguar Watford 2/04/12 (B Service), 48796 Jaguar Watford 7/12/12 (A Service), 67410 Kings Road Berkhamsted 11/11/13 (B Service) PDI.
I have no reason to distrust the Kings Road Garage however I would be gutted to have an incomplete service history.

Regards,

Jason

The dealers regularly offer "free health checks". It's useful to have another pair of eyes assess the vehicle but the primary reason they offer it is to drum up business.

They will almost certainly find something they recommend. Brakes and suspension are favourites. Whether any recommendations are essential for safety, preventative maintenance or just indicative of gradual wear in a used vehicle needs to be carefully assessed.

Looking forward to seeing professional photos. Mine always look terrible!

It all sounds good, Jason, and the Jaguar diesels are known as the best in the industry. I'm not too sure about the newer models like your own, I suspect they have much longer service intervals than the models I'm familiar with.
At that sort of mileage or above, Jaguar used to specify that ALL fluids were changed and ALL filters replaced. This would include brake fluid, transmission, differential, and coolant. These days more synthetic fluids are used which are supposed to last longer so it would be best to find exactly what Jaguar recommend on this and when.
Whenever I buy a car (not very often) I replace all fluids and filters as a matter of course as soon as I am able - but then I expect to run a car for two or three decades without major overhaul. This gives me a known starting point without having to take on trust whatever might or might not have been done in the past. It is all probably unneccesary when buying a modern three-year-old car.
You might want to take advice from an independant Jaguar specialist so that you have a 'second opinion' aside from the dealer who sold it you.
I'd suggest you'll probably find membership of one of the Jaguar clubs usefull also. I certainly do - for the regular magazine, club discounts (including insurance), meetings and general help and advice. I've been to several national Jaguar events over the years - including factory visits - and always found the crowd friendly and enthusiastic.
Its a lot more than just a car. Enjoy.

Thanks Guys, really appreciate the excellent advice and feedback.
I will probably sign up to there 3 year service plan as it works out at approx £44 a month (a sum I am more than happy with)

Here you go Graham, some pictures for you.

(I'm available for commissioned work at very low rates by the way haha)
