Default Garage Find

Hi, new to the forum and a new Jag owner. I found a 1986 XJ6 that was sitting in the owner's garage for the past fifteen years! It only has 61K on the ticker. Since it had sat that long the gas had turned to a dark colored varnish smelling liquid. It wouldn't start and trouble shooting found a bad fuel pump. I drained the tanks and not only did the stale gas come out (about a gallon and a half in one tank and five and a half in the other), but also a lot of debris.

My question is has anyone else experienced that junk in stale gas? It is brownish in color and almost looks like coffee grounds. I have read that removing and reinstalling the fuel tanks is a very difficult job. So I have been flushing gas through the tanks trying to get all that debris out.

I would love to know what it is and the best way to get it all out without having to remove the tanks. Any help would be appreciated.

I forgot to mention the debris isn't magnetic, so it isn't rust.

Welcome to the forum mrchooch,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

As you mention twin fuel tanks it must be the XJ6 Series III and not the XJ40 which was introduced in 1986 and also badged as XJ6. I never had a Series III but my Series I and Series II both had drain plugs in the bottom of the fuel tanks.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj6-xj12-series-i-ii-iii-16/ to the XJ6 Series I, II & III forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Have a look for a Drain Plug/Filter assembly (items 8 to 12):

It could save you a lot of time and effort.

Thanks, I have been able to drain the tanks, and flush gas back through the tanks after filtering it. I have flushed each tank about four times and I am still getting some debris. The fuel pump was dead, but none of that debris made it to the fuel filter which I cut opened and inspected. I really don't want to have to remove the tanks, but maybe that is in my future?

"I forgot to mention the debris isn't magnetic, so it isn't rust."

That's a blessing anyway. With the help from above posts and a good flush with fresh fuel and new filters should resolve that issue.

15 years is a long time for a car to sit idle,I can see the need for many new rubber parts and hoses in the future. Best of luck and welcome to Jaguar Forum from me.Neil.
