Default Hello Room

Picked up a '98 XJ8 VDP that was running rough and now trying to get it going. Read numerous posts / stickies and headed down the path to repair it. This forum has been a huge help already. Here's where I stand....

  • Checked the timing to see if had jumped time and it hadn't, changed to new secondary tensioners.
  • Cleaned the MAF. Cleaned the throttle body.
  • Smoke tested for vacuum leaks none found.
  • Cleaned EGR in valve cover.
  • Replaced plugs with NGK 5464's.
  • Compression is between 135 and 145 in all 8 cylinders
  • Battery relatively new, voltage is 12.3 V and when running, alt. is putting out 13.5V. I have voltage 12+V at every fuse block.
  • Fuel rail pressure measured waaay high 84psi.
  • Disconnected fuel lines at the rail, fuel flowed freely to the rail and out of the rail. Pressure dropped to 41psi when the return line was disconnected. Checked fuel lines for damage and seemed like there might be a kink under the gas tank from a prior owner stretching/bending the lines to remove the tank. Replaced the line to filter and straightened the return line. Reinstalled tank.
  • Currently will not start, cranks and "trys" to start but won't. Dash lights up and engine cranks, occasional sputter but no sustained running. Just read about flooding and will try to start using the floor it and crank it technique and or check for gas fouled plugs tomorrow.

Country: United States
Make: Jaguar
Model: XJ8 VDP
Year: 1998
Engine: 4.0
Mileage: 110K

cheers

Welcome to the forum zyggy,

Good to have you here with us at Jaguar forums.

With all that cranking, you could have cylinder bore wash. Follow Norri's link to the X308 forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham
